WAY OF THE CROSS
July 27, 2002

Posted on 07/27/2002 6:20:00 AM PDT by NYer

Fri Jul 26,10:51 PM ET

Actor Robert Legere, of St.Louis-de-Kent, New Brunswick, portraying Jesus Christ, reenacts the crucifixion as part of the World Youth Day celebrations, in Toronto, Ont. on Friday July 26, 2002.

An actor playing Jesus depicts the tortured stages of Christ's passage to the cross. He too is condemned to death, takes up his cross, falls under its weight and ultimately is hoisted above the crowd on that same crude frame.

Realism, said Ms. Parsons, is the objective. "It's an attempt to bring home the scarifices Jesus made for us."

With Mary, His Mother and John, the Evangelist, at the foot of the Cross.

"My God, My God, why have you abandoned me?"

"It is accomplished."

"Father, into your hands, I commend my Spirit."

All kneel at this point.

Quite significant, in my opinion, that EWTN did not offer comments during the last three stations. They just let the pictures and music relay their message.

I guess I got a little ahead of myself; they are doing the Thirteenth Station right now.

Human impatience -- bah!

I've been waiting for this song! I confess, it is one of my Holy Week favorities.

"Were you there when they crucified my Lord?"

Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?

"Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?"

Fourteenth Station now.

Sorry about my earlier haste. But the statement about EWTN not interrupting still stands. Beautiful.

I hope all of you got to watch it on your computers or on TV either last night or today.

The promise of the Resurrection.

The empty tomb will speak for itself on Easter morning! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

A sign of everlasting love. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The empty tomb is a sign of eteral hope! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

I don't get EWTN TV - these are great posts. Jesus has a good representative in JP II. In a world clamoring for war, JP II is a standout for peace.

Do the three falls of Jesus represent the Past? The Present? The Future?

Perhaps... I would guess that they do have a profound meaning.

A most beautiful pieta! The only one more precious is that of Michelangelo, which I have seen, at St. Peter's in Rome. The striking aspect of Michelangelo's pieta is the duality of Mary's face. If you cover the top or bottom half of her face, the other is old or young. He incorporated her youth while demonstrating how the pain of watching her son, aged her in a short period of time.

Mine too! Also, "The Wood of the Cross". I sang in choir at my parish on LI. Holy Week was absolutely the most beautiful insofar as musical selection. Here in Albany, the liberal approach is heavy into contemporary music.

BTW, the music in the background at the Stations of the Cross, comes from the Taize Community. When I have some time, I'll post the story behind it.

Mom, I didn't know you were around between 1914 and 1918. (joke) The first war to end all wars.
