Today, Pope Leo XIV appointed Father Mario León Dorado, 52 — a T-shirt guy and an adherent of the heretical Abu Dhabi program — as Coadjutor Archbishop of Rabat, Morocco. Born in Madrid, Dorado joined the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1996 and was ordained a priest in 2001.

He has served as Apostolic Prefect of Western Sahara since 2013.

“The Church is called to disappear”

In September 2022, he wrote a reflection on his almost two decades of missionary work in an extraordinarily small Catholic community. His experience is that authentic love makes it possible to welcome the other without the 'need to change him'.

Dorado draws his own conclusion: “The Church is called to disappear so that the Kingdom may grow.” He explained his ecclesiology with the explicit analogy to John the Baptist's words in John 3:30, "He must increase, but I must decrease."

"Blessings" for homosexual couples

As the ordinary of Western Sahara, Dorado participated in the January 2024 assembly that accepted the implementation of Fiducia supplicans in North Africa. They gave the go-ahead for a blessing for homosexuals who present themselves together.

The move sought to break the resistance of most of the African episcopate to the implementation of Fiducia supplicans.

Muslim saints

In 2018, Dorado described 114 Algerian imams murdered after refusing to endorse Islamist violence as “114 ‘authentic Muslim martyrs.’”

He placed them alongside the Catholic martyrs as witnesses of “coexistence, peace and encounter,” and said: “Perhaps they will all help us with their example and intercession.”

The Abu Dhabi “agenda”

Following Francis's 2019 visit to Morocco, Dorado praised the program set out in the controversial Abu Dhabi Document on Human Fraternity ("God wills diverse religions").

Dorado wrote that Abu Dhabi and the papal visit to Morocco revealed “a whole agenda and purpose,” including making interreligious dialogue a priority. Dorado said that Francis had confirmed their faith, life and mission.

“Universal brotherhood” and dialogue with Islam

In 2020, he signed a declaration committing the North African churches to “universal brotherhood,” ecumenism and Christian-Muslim dialogue.

In a 2022 interview with Aid to the Church in Need, Dorado explained that a central characteristic of the North African churches is dialogue and encounter with Muslims.

Five women accuse his predecessor

Dorado will now succeed Cardinal Cristóbal López Romero, who was the most prominent public face of North African support for Fiducia supplicans.

Cardinal López Romero stepped back from governing the archdiocese after five women accused him of inappropriate sexual conduct, prompting the Vatican to open an investigation.
