David Becomes King Over Israel

5 All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the Lord said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.’”

3 When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.

4 David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.

Forty-Nine years ago today, Singer/Actor Elvis Presley was found dead in the Bathroom of his home. Although some were scandalized by his music (and Stage Moves!), he was an enormous influence on American Pop Culture, and embodies the whole genre of the the 1950s and early 60s. Somewhere along the line, he was dubbed "The King of Rock and Roll", or simply "THE KING". In my own humble opinion, I believe he was a very talented but vulnerable youth who was manipulated and exploited by the Music Industry (so what else is new?) and started to believe his own Press. I also believe that he was a decent man deep down, loved his Mom, and, judging from his heartfelt interpretation of traditional Hymns, loved the Lord as well. I still have some of his records, and they still sound good, half a century later.

Here we are talking about Elvis, nearly a half century after his death. Next 8/16/27, I'll probably remember him again. The "Personality" of Elvis has stood the test of time.

David was 30 years old when he was crowned King of all Israel. He started out as a "Country Boy", anointed while he was yet a teenager. He was a musician whose talent landed him in the court of King Saul, who couldn't sleep without David's Music. We don't know what David sang to Saul, but we know that he loved the Lord from his composition of his amazing Psalms, which are still sung and recited today. He endured disapproval that amounted to attempted murder.

David also did a lot of "womanizing" and Sinning. God doesn't let him get away with that. His deepest desire was to build a Temple for his God, and God didn't let him do it.

And now, after years of running, David is made King. He will end up ruling for forty years There were many kings after David, most of them terrible. One wonders what impact his "Kingship" had over world events.

But...his Songs live forever, and we're still singing them 4000 years later.
