America Cut Off Its Christian Roots. Now It’s in Crisis. - Eric Metaxas

I sat down with bestselling author Eric Metaxas to discuss the Christian roots of America and what happens to our freedom if we forget them. His new book, “Revolution,” tells the story of the founding and the values that make America exceptional.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

I would slightly argue that "we" did not cut off our Christian roots, that "they" (the progressives) did this to us but either way the disconnect from who we are is still very real.

And we will fall like every other great nation/empire has through-out history when they abandon their true selves and become decadent, apathetic, and lazy.

Christianity created and established a non-violent society that protected all human life.
In 1774 (and following) several sovereign states made this order the ideal life existence.

Peaceful liberty is ideal, but ...

It’s only a matter of time before we become a socialist country. When the enemy owns the media and education….. it’s a foregone conclusion.

But on the positive side, at least Christians like Eric Metaxas and Rick Warren and Joel Osteen and Steven Furtick will continue to get insanely richer using the pulpit to sell their books and seminars and workshops and CDs.

Just like Jesus did.

Can't even get His name right. Even though His Name is above every other name and there's power in His Name and Satan (which is NOT a name) flees at the mentoon of His Name.

Go ahead. Commence flaming. I forgive you.

Oh, for the record, His Name is Yeshua.

agree, America didn’t.

But many people chose to be so busy with fun and “American dream”, and maybe that it wasn’t exactly impacting them in the moment, they stood idly by as it happened over a century or more.

Our Declaration of Independence is a Covenant with God Almighty.

Many Americans are truly faithful, and have been all along.

God is always faithful.

There is a lot of cynicism on this thread. But let me point out some the worthy things Metaxas says his book emphasizes: he refutes several of the fundamental lies that have been popularized by the left by saying:
The U.S. is the only country in the world founded not on ethnicity, but on a set of ideas.

The central Founding idea is that American citizens have certain inherent rights because they are children of God; freedom is a Biblical idea going back to Moses and the Israelites having thrown off the tyranny of a pharaoah and adopting self-government because God is their high king, not other human beings.

The pronounced majority of the Founders were Christians, not unbelievers or mere Deists.

Most of the Founders decried the institution of slavery; however, two of the 13 colonies refused to sign the Declaration of Independence unless its original passage repudiating the British imposition of slavery onto the colonies was stricken from the Declaration.

The British soldiers were unspeakably cruel and barbarous to American soldiers, civilians and prisoners of war, including torture, starvation, rape and pillaging, and bayoneting of those who had already surrendered.

Present-day Americans have drifted away from knowledge of the Founding virtues based in Biblical concepts.

Metaxas wrote the book to mark what he says is our third existential crisis, the first being the American Revolution and the second the American Civil War. The moderator says the book has become a bestseller.

It is satisfying for conservatives to hear the low opinion held by Metaxas and the moderator of Zohran Mamdani and others of his mindset, that of denigration of this country, and of having come here as immigrants and run for office with the aim of discarding our Founding principles.

A fair assessment.

Even now we have more non-left people watching the NFL than being activists, so what you say has perhaps not yet ended.

I read Metaxas’s book. It is wonderful. A real page turner. His description of the barbarities of the British occupiers was new to me. He says more Americans died as prisoners of war during the Revolution than died on the battlefield. The British conduct was contemptible—Metaxas says that kind of conduct today would be regarded as war crimes.

I had an ancestor in the Revolution. He was captured in western Pennsylvania by Indians and turned over to the British as a prisoner of war. He was imprisoned for more than a year. Somehow, he survived and made his way back to Pennsylvania on foot from a British prison in Quebec. He rejoined a patriot militia and continued to fight.

I couldn’t put the Metaxas book down. I highly recommend it. It is much more interesting than the Ken Burns documentary on the Revolution.

Thank you so much for your review! I was so disappointed in the earlier "see a headline and spout crap" posts. At last, someone who actually read the work! Revolution is on my book list now for myself and for Christmas gifts.

Very good post.

Metaxas has definitely become one of our better thinkers and authors. He has good interviews on YouTube also.
