2 Kings 6:1-7

An Axhead Floats

6 The company of the prophets said to Elisha, “Look, the place where we meet with you is too small for us. 2 Let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a pole; and let us build a place there for us to meet.”

And he said, “Go.”

3 Then one of them said, “Won’t you please come with your servants?”

“I will,” Elisha replied. 4 And he went with them.

They went to the Jordan and began to cut down trees. 5 As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh no, my lord!” he cried out. “It was borrowed!”

6 The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float. 7 “Lift it out,” he said. Then the man reached out his hand and took it.

Nearly seven years ago, I was intrigued by this chapter. here's what I wrote back then:

Both of my brothers had careers in the Automotive Industry, one in Auto Body and the other in Auto Mechanics. (And...both of them were ALWAYS better off than their four college-educated sisters...go figure!). Both started on the ground floor in their respective trades, and both had to start collecting their own tools, which went with them from job to job. One needed to buy ALL the tools at once, not one at a time as one could afford them.

Some very enterprising entrepreneurs saw a need and filled it by extending credit to these young tradesmen, providing the tools in a large steel rolling tool box, and then collecting the monthly payments right at the place of employment in person. I don't know if they also employed a direct payroll deduction, but they worked very closely with the Shop. This way, a young man fresh out of High School could get a good job, a start at building good credit, and a personal collection of quality tools for his trade. The Shop benefited by having a responsible and skilled individual working there and using his own tools, and thereby saving the Shop lots of money as well. Tools are expensive.

Tools were even more expensive in Elisha's day. Forged by hand, by the very sweat of the blacksmith's brow, and axehead was probably worth its weight in gold. The young man from the Community of Prophets was in big trouble when the axehead slipped off its handle and sank into the water. The owner of the tool could possibly sell the young man into servitude to pay off such a debt. (Not nearly as humane and convenient as opening a charge account with the Tool Company!)

Elisha does a strange thing. He puts a piece of wood in the water. Wood floats, and one could argue that it was a "votive" type of gesture, but Elisha was far wiser and sophisticated than that.

A "votive" is the practice of primitive religions of creating an image of the item desired in order for the thing to come to pass. The most obvious type of votive offering is the cave painting of the very prey the hunter wished to capture, or the veneration of rabbits to insure fertility. It is the concept of "like brings like", and is a form of "Magical Thinking".

Elisha was not doing a ritual or a "magic trick". He knew that throwing a stick in the water would not bring the axehead floating to the surface. So, what was going on?

In retrospect, we need to look at a much higher plane of Faith and Symbolism than mere Votive Offerings. Let's look at the elements in this story:

1. The Axehead: In the Torah, (Deut 19) a flying axehead causing an accidental death is given as an example of Involuntary Manslaughter. The woodsman swinging the axe had no intention of killing his neighbor, but alas, the neighbor is still DEAD. It was for situations such as these that the Cities of Refuge were designated. The relatives of the deceased had to consider this before seeking revenge. To this day, our laws have varying degrees of homicide, including "Involuntary Manslaughter". The lost axehead in Elisha's case was still a debt that would have to be paid, even though it was an accident. The valuable tool was still lost, and there would be a penalty.

2. Iron: Iron was so important to Ancient People that its discovery and working created its own Era, called appropriately "The Iron Age". It makes much better tools and weapons than stone, and was a distinct advantage in warfare, farming, building, and so on. It did, however, have some disadvantages. It was HEAVY, and it RUSTS. Jesus even references rust in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6:19) when He speaks of "laying up Treasure in Heaven". Iron is also mentioned in The Book of Daniel, to symbolize a Corrupt, Evil Empire with Feet of Clay. So, based upon the Torah, the Prophet Daniel, and the Sermon of the Mount, it seems to be a safe bet that Iron can represent SIN. And, to further the analogy, sin is HEAVY, Corrupting, and Drags us DOWN (I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore...from the Hymn "Love Lifted me")

3. Wood: We once did a series right on this Thread about "Wood" in the Bible. From the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden to the Tree of Life For the Healing of Nations in Revelation 22, Wood symbolizes Redemption, Knowledge, Life, and Healing all through both the Old and New Testaments. Moses' Staff, The Waters healed both in Exodus and 2 Kings, and, of course, THE CROSS, are all examples of this in Scripture. Wood floats, and therefore can be said to "Lift Up".

And so, Elisha puts a piece of wood in the water. The axehead, freed from the weight and corruption of the iron, floats to the surface. The young man is freed from a possible life of servitude, and the Community of Prophets goes back to work building their new home.

Just my opinion...but I think it fits.

I thought of the cross being made of wood that carried our Savior. The axe head could also be a metaphor for Him, who cuts down sin and death with the Truth of His Word. His crucifixion could keep Him down either when He rose from death. The greatest of all miracles!
