U.S. Catholic leaders are ending their church’s 50-year partnership with the federal government and seeking new ways to help refugees.
Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, announced the change in a press release and Washington Post column on Monday, arguing that the Trump administration forced his denomination’s hand.
“The bishops’ decision came after the federal government suspended our cooperative agreements to resettle refugees. The drastic reduction of these programs forced us to reconsider the best way to serve the needs of our brothers and sisters seeking safe harbor from violence and persecution,” he wrote for The Washington Post.
As Archbishop Broglio noted, the Catholic Church in the U.S. has been reeling since President Donald Trump froze federal funding for refugee resettlement programs after taking office in January.
Catholic leaders are fighting that order in court, but they’ve determined they can’t afford to maintain their current refugee programs amid the legal uncertainty.
“The work simply cannot be sustained at current levels or in its current form with only the church’s resources. I have been praying for the impacted refugees, but I would also ask that you join me in praying for the many dedicated staffers who have selflessly carried out this work,” Archbishop Broglio said.
In deciding to formally end its relationship with the federal government, U.S. Catholic leaders are disrupting their church’s century-long effort to serve immigrants and refugees.
Since 1920, Catholic leaders have worked to help vulnerable families, including persecuted people of faith, rebuild their lives in the U.S., according to Archbishop Broglio’s press release.
“Over the years, partnerships with the federal government helped expand lifesaving programs, benefiting our sisters and brothers from many parts of the world.

Maybe just worry about souls. Worry about peoples’ salvation. It’s cheaper.
If it’s paid for by government tax dollars taken from citizens it isn’t charity, it’s a business.
FU Catholic “Charities.”
I thought it was considered a sin to lie even for Catholics.
The Catholic Church has not focused on disadvantaged families, they have been importing military aged men who should be staying in their own country and working to fix those problems.
All for the love of mammon.
As a Catholic, I say - I am very glad Trump forced your corrupt hand. Maybe even we’ll get to see a few prosecutions for human trafficking among the neo-marxists in these organizations
The Catholic charities should help these refugees by sending them to Catholic-majority countries and without US taxpayers’ money.
about time
Catholic Charities ruined All of Maine in attempts to continue services after the Vietnam boat people.
They went out of their way to resettle Somalis from other parts of the country to Maine to give themselves something to do.
The Catholic Church is a Traitor where Illegal Immigration is concerned.
Trump should take this to its logical conclusion. Defund all charitable institutions and NGOs. It is not an act of charity to take from one person and give to another.
I know FR MAGA believes we should take care of our own especially on social security and health care. But my own does not extend much further then my family, church, and local community. I will take of them. Everyone else should take care of theirs. If churches want to help immigrants and refugees and they should they should do it based on giving by their congregants. Not by lobbying the fed to take it from us so they can give it to them. And everyone grifting along the way.
Truth.
Long overdue. And also good for the church even if those running the program don’t think so.
With any luck, and a bit of divine intervention, maybe this will end the sham that is Catholic Charities. In my mind, the execrable Patrice Parillie remains the poster child for this refugee wing of the DNC.
I believe one of the commandments is “ thou shalt not steal” what else is it when tax payer money is used to fund illegal immigration? Taking away federal dollars does nothing to prevent individual charity.
The Catholic Church is bleeding members in the US and immigrants from Catholic countries are thought to be the best way to fill the pews. I say this as a practicing Catholic.
Completely agree
IF it’s paid for by government tax dollars taken from citizens it isn’t charity, it’s a business.

I’m Catholic and I agree with you. Catholic Charities has been a criminal organization in league with democrats and drug cartels for some time now. The last thing they were concerned about was the people crossing the border. It has been shameful.
Since the border is now effectively closed what would they spend the money on?
I am a lifelong practicing Catholic who agrees with you completely. I make sure to not contribute to the annual bishops’ appeal or to the pope’s peter pence.
Ditto
