This was in my e-mail today from Reasons for Hope*Jesus ministry. I am sure some of you Freepers like myself remember this one by Paul Harvey. Thought I would share . . .

If I Were the Devil by Paul Harvey (1918-2009)

From 1951 to 2008, radio broadcaster Paul Harvey reached as many as 24 million people per week. He was deemed the “most listened-to man” in radio broadcasting, famous for his “rest of the story” radio shows.

On a radio show in 1965, Harvey presented the narrative “If I Were the Devil.” It’s known that Paul Harvey was a Christian, so the purpose of the broadcast was to bring a revelation of the devil’s work in the mid-1960s. That was a time of great social and political unrest and increasing sin due to compromising ethics, morals, and values. It was also the decade when prayer in school became prohibited (1962), the hippie culture with sex, drugs, and rock and roll arose, and young people increasingly left the church.

So Harvey used his show to expound on what he (or anyone) might do if he were the devil. The point was to highlight how Satan thinks and works, which is as true today as in the 1960s. The only difference is that the devil’s work has become more exposed in our culture but is sadly unseen by more people.

If I were the devil …

If I were the Prince of Darkness, I’d want to engulf the whole world in darkness. And I’d have a third of its real estate, and four-fifths of its population, but I wouldn’t be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree — Thee. So I’d set about however necessary to take over the United States. I’d subvert the churches first — I’d begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: ‘Do as you please.’

To the young, I would whisper that ‘The Bible is a myth.’ I would convince them that man created God instead of the other way around. I would confide that what’s bad is good, and what’s good is ‘square.’ And the old, I would teach to pray, after me, ‘Our Father, which art in Washington…’

And then I’d get organized. I’d educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting, so that anything else would appear dull and uninteresting. I’d threaten TV with dirtier movies and vice versa. I’d pedal narcotics to whom I could. I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. I’d tranquilize the rest with pills.

If I were the devil …

I’d soon have families at war with themselves, churches at war with themselves, and nations at war with themselves; until each in its turn was consumed. And with promises of higher ratings I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames. If I were the devil, I would encourage schools to refine young intellects, but neglect to discipline emotions — just let those run wild, until before you knew it, you’d have to have drug sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door.

Within a decade I’d have prisons overflowing, I’d have judges promoting pornography — soon I could evict God from the courthouse, then from the schoolhouse, and then from the houses of Congress. And in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and deify science. I would lure priests and pastors into misusing boys and girls, and church money. If I were the devil, I’d make the symbols of Easter an egg and the symbol of Christmas a bottle.

If I were the devil …

I’d take from those who have, and give to those who wanted until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious. And what do you bet? I couldn’t get whole states to promote gambling as the way to get rich? I would caution against extremes and hard work, in Patriotism, in moral conduct. I would convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned, that swinging is more fun, that what you see on TV is the way to be. And thus I could undress you in public, and I could lure you into bed with diseases for which there is no cure.

In other words, if I were the devil I’d just keep right on doing on what he’s doing. Paul Harvey, good day.

We come before You with thanksgiving in our hearts that as believers in Christ Jesus we have been born into Your Family. . . knowing that You are ready and waiting for anyone who does not know Your Son Jesus as his or her personal Savior to join The Family by confessing sin and acknowledging Jesus’ Sacrifice on The Cross and His Saving Grace for the forgiveness of sins. If we do that Your Word says we will not perish but have Everlasting Life. Please help us spread the Good News of Your Saving Grace. Put people in our paths and direct our testimony in helping them understand Your Plan of Salvation. For there is nothing more important in life than our relationship with You, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

WHAT IS THE PLAN OF SALVATION?

Salvation is deliverance. All the world religions teach that we need to be delivered, but each has a different understanding of what we need to be delivered from, why we need to be delivered, and how that deliverance can be received or achieved. The Bible makes it abundantly clear, however, that there is only one Plan of Salvation.

The most important thing to understand about the Plan of Salvation is that it is God’s plan, not humanity’s plan. Humanity’s plan of salvation would be observing religious rituals or obeying certain commands or achieving certain levels of spiritual enlightenment. But none of these things are part of God’s Plan of Salvation.

GOD’S PLAN OF SALVATION – THE WHY
In God’s Plan of Salvation, first we must understand why we need to be saved. Simply put, we need to be saved because we have sinned. The Bible declares that everyone has sinned (Ecclesiastes 7:20; Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:8). Sin is rebellion against God. We all choose to actively do things that are wrong. Sin harms others, damages us, and, most importantly, dishonors God. The Bible also teaches that, because God is holy and just, He cannot allow sin to go unpunished. The punishment for sin is death (Romans 6:23) and eternal separation from God (Revelation 20:11–15). Without God’s Plan of Salvation, eternal death is the destiny of every human being.

GOD’S PLAN OF SALVATION – THE WHAT
In God’s Plan of Salvation, God Himself is the only one who can provide for our salvation. We are utterly unable to save ourselves because of our sin and its consequences. God became a human being in the Person of Jesus Christ (John 1: , 14). Jesus lived a sinless life (2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15; 1 John 3:5) and offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice on our behalf (1 Corinthians 15:3; Colossians 1:22; Hebrews 10:10). Since Jesus is God, His death was of infinite and eternal value. The death of Jesus Christ on the cross fully paid for the sins of the entire world (1 John 2:2). His resurrection from the dead demonstrated that His sacrifice was indeed sufficient and that salvation is now available.

GOD’S PLAN OF SALVATION – THE HOW
In Acts 16:31, a man asked the apostle Paul how to be saved. Paul’s response was, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.” The way to follow God’s Plan of Salvation is to believe. That is the only requirement (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8–9). God has provided for our Salvation through Jesus Christ. All we must do is receive it, by faith, fully trusting in Jesus alone as Savior (John 14:6; Acts 4:12). That is God’s Plan of Salvation.

GOD’S PLAN OF SALVATION – WILL YOU RECEIVE IT?
If you are ready to follow God’s Plan of Salvation, place your faith in Jesus as your Savior. Change your mind from embracing sin and rejecting God to rejecting sin and embracing God through Jesus Christ. Fully trust in the sacrifice of Jesus as the perfect and complete payment for your sins. If you do this, God’s Word promises that you will be saved, your sins will be forgiven, and you will spend eternity in heaven. There is no more important decision. Place your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior today!

Father God, we pray for closer relationships with You. . . not only for ourselves but for our families, friends, our leaders in government . . . . everyone who acknowledges Your Deity.

We are experiencing tumultuous times in the face of the implementation of “taking back America”. We pray that those in leadership positions will not do anything without first seeking Your Guidance. Please Heavenly Father thwart/expose the evil one’s plan for America . . . for we know You hold all our tomorrows in Your Hand.

Please provide protection for our President, Vice-President, their families as well as our military, border patrol, first responders, those carrying out Presidential orders, citizens and government workers who find themselves in harm’s way standing up for what is right and standing against the wrongs such as abortion, homosexuality.

We pray that those Churches that have “gone astray” by adopting “woke ideology” will realize their ways and “return to their First Love – Jesus” and if they don’t, please lead congregants to Scripturally correct churches.

We ask in the Name of Jesus for: a speedy vindication of patriots; hope and health for those victims of storms and violence; a health care system that is based on truth; children who are victims of abuse and indoctrination; those who are in need of Your healing touch; Your State of Israel and their decisions; and an educational system based on precepts aligned with Yours.

Thank You, God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit for loving us unconditionally and hearing our prayers.
