Each year, tens of thousands of inmates in the U.S. are converting to Islam while incarcerated. The latest installment of the "CBS Mornings" series "The State of Spirituality with Lisa Ling" explores why the faith is connecting with so many behind bars. Converting to Islam in prison
Most days, Rami Nsour heads to his local post office to find his mailbox stuffed with letters from incarcerated people from all over the country seeking his spiritual guidance and Islamic education resources. Nsour is the founding director of the Tayba Foundation, the first organization in the U.S. to offer a distance-learning program in Islamic education to inmates.
"When we started about 15 years ago, that was the main need that we heard from Muslim prisoners," Nsour said. "So, we developed this organization to fill that gap and that need."
Islam is the fastest growing religion in U.S. prisons. Nsour said his organization has served over 13,000 individuals and he estimates that around 90% of them converted to Islam and most while behind bars. Nsour believes many are converting while incarcerated because there is so much physical and spiritual confinement in prison and people find spiritual freedom within the faith.
"Because it has a level of submission, so you submit to a certain regiment, there's five daily prayers, there's a method," Nsour explained. "They see that those walls can't confine them anymore." Amin's story
Muhammad Amin Anderson was attracted to Islam for many reasons, including the spiritual freedom it provides him. He converted to Islam about two years into a 30-year sentence for a gang-related murder.
"When I came to prison, I didn't have my humanity โฆ but after entering prison, I recovered my humanity," he said, crediting Islam for helping him recover it.

Seeking the message of the “Master of Deception”.
Homosexuals groom children.
Muslims groom prisoners.
Humanity———mooselimbs? Not seeing it. Sorry, not sorry!
the one and only good thing about the evil which is Islam, is that at least they stick to what they believe. They don’t go searching for a mosque that validates their sins like most Christians do.
False doctrine, by reclaiming his humanity he likely means his violent tendencies to force others to his belief system and realty are now justified.
That is one thing Islam brings to the table. It justifies the forceable submission of others and provides for the follows a means to feel superior. It does not promote humbleness towards others.
I think it was the 60s when the left and militant blacks started pushing Islam for blacks and Islam in prison.
How many remember in the early to mid 1990s when it was discovered that Farrakhan’s Black Muslims were being paid millions by the government to supply security for government housing projects.
I disagree. Especially in light of this article, which is the attraction Islam has for prison inmates. Muhammad's violent teachings validates people who tend to do violent behavior.
Such a coincidence.
As usual for the mooselimbs.
Murderous gang recruiting in prisons.
B.S. Convicts join religious groups for protection behind bars, and adding religion to your time behind bars looks good in your record when you come up for parole. It's called playing the system.
Itโs whiteys fault.
What was the expression I heard for this phenomenon years ago? Oh, yeah:โDodging the d!ck.โ
But they want to murder me.
I take a little comfort that, if the Muslims eventually form a Grand Caliphate, the sheep and goats together will have solid target for a class-action lawsuit for the centuries of sexual harassment and abuse.
Back on subject, if imprisoned would my plan to join the Aryan Nation with an obligatory Nazi tat make the blacks who'd converted to Islam my allies due to supposed ideological sharing of anti-Semitism? Or is their Farrakhan sect more a "hate all whitey" thing?
It’s crazy watching all of this happen
Whatever. Do your time like a good little muslim and hopefully you make parole. Be a good boy for (fillintheblank) years probation and then hold a job for 5-10 years and maybe I’ll feel safe around you.
