This morning I took a much shorter walk with Tippy than usual because it is bitter cold outside. A neighbor, who was wearing flip-flops, came outside to give Tippy her obligatory pats and belly rub. I kept looking at this man's naked feet and thinking about how cold and uncomfortable he must have been. Perhaps he was just stepping outside for a second...and then Tippy came along!

We got to talking and he was upset at the latest rent increase in our community.

"We're gonna sell this place and move out!" he declared.

I didn't say so, but that would be going from the frying pan into the fire. His house was the most dilapidated in the park, and would probably never sell. It would most likely be left abandoned, lowering the property values of every other house in the community, including my own. I started advocating for his house, citing the wonderful school system, safety, and the fact that our "rent" also covered Taxes, Water, Sewer, Plowing, and Trash Collection. But he wasn't hearing it, and his feet were getting cold.

Later this morning, as I was eating my breakfast, two lines for a new song emerged from my mind, based upon the conversation:

Shuttered Windows,
Shattered Dream,
Broken Vows,
Left Unredeemed...

That's all I have for now. There is nothing sadder looking than an abandoned house.

Conversely, a "lived-in" house exudes life and warmth, especially this time of year. Even the humblest home seems decked out for Christmas this year. It's a lovely sight to see.

In these meditations on The Holy Spirit, we have seen Him as a Person, a Healer, The Spirit of Truth, Prophecy, and Power, Our Mentor, Advocate, Teacher, Interpreter, Friend, and many more offices. For the next few days, we will look at the Scriptures that describe The Holy Spirit as The Indweller of Believers. The Believer is therefore compared to a "House" or, since The Holy Spirit is God, a Temple.

Not only does this show on the inside, (as he provides Comfort, Guidance, and Peace), it also shows on the outside. For example, if you have God-Given Wisdom, pretty soon it will get around that you are the "go to" person for advice. What is Kindness if it isn't extended to someone who needs it? The Gifts and Fruit of The Holy Spirit are meant to be shared, like the glow from a warm house beaming light out to the street.

I really hope the neighbor will opt to improve his house and stay, but even more, I pray that he will experience the Light and Love of being Indwelt by The Holy Spirit of God.

And put some SHOES on!
