Torn between my faith and the Pope
American Thinker ^ | 12/10/2024 | Kevin Finn

I have written here before about Catholics who support people, policies, and practices that are against the faith. One example is an American President who claims to be a Catholic while at the same time promoting abortion and same-sex marriage. The ever tone-deaf Biden regime recently chose the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception to celebrate ‘Pansexual and Panromantic Pride Day’ because “everyone deserves to feel seen, respected, and supported -- no matter who they love.” No comment from Ashley Biden.

Disturbingly, nearly half of all Catholics think abortion should be allowed in all or nearly all circumstances. A failure of catechesis.

What bothers this Catholic more than government leaders taking stands that violate their faith, is when the head of the religion itself does so. Pope Francis recently took part in advancing the fake 'Palestinian Jesus' narrative. I cannot say that the Pope Francis' actions here are the final straw as, in my opinion he broke that camel's back a long time ago. His papal tenure has been a death of a thousand cuts. I had a great deal of respect and admiration for both Saint Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. While they both may have occasionally said and done things I disagreed with, overall I valued their Pontificates.

Not so with Pope Francis. In the Vatican gardens in 2019, Pope Francis blessed a pagan fertility statue in an action condemned by bishops, cardinals, and theologians. Cardinal Raymond Burke said, “Something very grave happened during the special assembly of the Bishops’ Synod for the Amazon region. An idol [Pachamama] was introduced into St Peter’s Basilica -- the figure of a demonic force."

Pope Francis is steeped in liberation theology, which tends towards Marxism and focuses on social work rather than salvation.

A Church that gives communion to abortionists is not a God led Church. A real Church would evict these people and bar the door to their return but . . . there is filthy lucre to be made keeping them. Therein lies the rub.

“Pope” Francis is an oxymoron. A queer communist is the most charitable description one would use.

Before you leave the Church go and look at all of the scandals that have befallen it from the Crucifixion to the Apostolic Age to the Middle Ages to the Reformation to the current day. Let me know the Church you intend to join with no sinners and I'll be there.

Until then, I'll be with Peter and Christ's Church.

That is a lot of baggage you are carrying on your back.

It is kinda like a jockey running a horse race with one hundred pounds of lead on their back.

RE: I’ll be with Peter and Christ’s Church.

You are assuming that you have to be in the Catholic Church to be with Peter and Christ’s Church.

That's not an assumption; that's a fact.

Not torn at all. My faith remains steadfast...The Pope...well...he’s not MY pope. My faith comes from God not the Pope.

Throughout the Middle Ages (the Age of Faith) would your average Catholic have had the obligation to pay attention to the statements and actions of a pope let alone have the opinion on them? Not, he might not even have known the name of the pope and that did not make him any less of a Catholic than anyone today. Personally, I think where you might be a bit off track is in thinking that you have an obligation to pay any heed to, or even have an opinion on, his statements and actions outside of the very few, circumscribed areas of actual authority (where to be fair, he is also terrible). To me, his daily heretical mutterings and scandalous activities are just not something I am required to pay attention to, so I choose not to. (This BTW is my view of Vatican II also - since when are lay Catholics required to have opinions on councils? Not required to personally stake out a line on something, so why cause yourself the agitation. Just worry about what need to do yourself, what you have to do for yourself and others and your own individual participation).

Correct.

And soon, I pray, the Holy Spirit, will cleanse His Church.

Compared to the weight of Christ's cross that He carried, it is as light as a feather.

Let's see what Peter himself had to say on the subject. 1 Peter 2:4-6:

4Come to Him [the risen Lord] as to a living Stone which men rejected and threw away, but which is choice and precious in the sight of God. 5 You [believers], like living stones, are [b]being built up into a spiritual house for a holy and dedicated priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices [that are] acceptable and pleasing to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For this is contained in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a chosen stone, a precious (honored) Cornerstone, And he who believes in Him [whoever adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] will never be disappointed [in his expectations].”

Bible geek tips: "Disappointed" in verse 6 in the Greek is kataischuno, and means disgraced, put to shame. And the Scripture reference in verse 6 is Isaiah 28:16, which says that believers in the coming Cornerstone will not make haste (as in running around like chickens with our heads cut off cuz).

So Rocky himself (Simon renamed Peter) says that we're to believe on the Rock of Jesus (the living Stone in verse 4) and be rocks ourselves (living stones in verse 5) and act as priests offering spiritual sacrifices to God. I'm having trouble seeing anywhere in that telling us that we're supposed to call a single man today our great papa and obey him instead of Scripture. Not even the so-called first pope said to do it. Peter himself said that all of us believers are priests/rocks serving The Rock. Once you realize this, I promise you it'll be a lot easier to say, "Ain't nobody my pope" than it'll be to try to figure out if the current pope is a good guy, a bad guy, a duped guy, etc.

See tagline. Learn it. Love it. Live it.

It sounds like you are falling in love with the concept of martyrdom.

It looks better on some folks than others.

Lol.

“Catholic” means universal; the implication is that there is but one church that all must enter to be in the ark of salvation.
One, holy, catholic, and apostolic are the four necessary characters of the church.
All members must submit to the church’s and her vicar’s (the pope’s) authority in doctrine and morals. Those who do not recognize the pope as Christ’s vicar are heretics and are lost.
Today is a time of fulfilled prophecy, that of the great apostacy. The time when “many will be led astray”. And a great part of that is that a great delusion has been sent, namely a time of a false pope, currently named “Francis”. It impossible that a non-Catholic can be a true pope. So please accept how trying the times we live in truly are! Do not oversimplify the problem.
