2 Timothy 4

I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead when he comes to set up his Kingdom: 2 Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching.

3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will reject the truth and chase after myths.

5 But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.

Dear Lord Jesus, prepare our hearts to become bold, no matter what the national political outcome is, for we see that we may be closer to the time of the Great Tribulation than we imagined.

With that in mind, we can not neglect to pray for those who are doing battle politically for our nation.

Lord Jesus, we lift up Donald Trump and all those who are opposing this dangerous slide into a government that has abandoned your moral standard.

Lord Jesus, we pray for justice for those who are falsely accused. We also pray that the scenario painted by the media of deceit be exposed and crumble apart.

Lord Jesus, we pray that your people would be beacons of light in this dark day, that we would be about the Lord's business in helping those in our communities.

Awaken Your people Lord.

During this chaotic time of upheaval in this world, I was led to ponder the lyrics of this old hymn.

HISTORY
The Story Behind Trust and Obey: the rewards of trusting God’s word and obeying God’s will

John H. Sammis was the writer of the Christian hymn Trust and Obey in 1887 with music composed by Daniel Towner the year before. Sammis was a man of business who later turned to preaching for a Presbyterian church. He also became a teacher at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles.

The inspiration for this hymn began in 1886 when the composer of the music, Daniel B. Towner, was the music conductor during one of Dwight L. Moody’s renowned revivals. Towner offered the following testimony cited by Moody’s musical partner, Ira D. Sankey, in his biography, My Life and the Story of the Gospel Hymns:

“Mr. Moody was conducting a series of meetings in Brockton, Massachusetts, and I had the pleasure of singing for him there. One night a young man rose in a testimony meeting and said, ‘I am not quite sure—but I am going to trust, and I am going to obey.’ I just jotted that sentence down and sent it with a little story to the Rev. J. H. Sammis, a Presbyterian minister. He wrote the hymn, and the tune was born.”

1 When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,

Dear Lord Jesus, prepare our hearts to become bold, no matter what the national political outcome is, for we see that we may be closer to the time of the Great Tribulation than we imagined.

Father God, help us to trust and obey.
Help us not to be distracted or discouraged.
Help us to continue to lean into You.
Let us never forget that Your judgment and Your timing are Perfect.
