Southern Baptists narrowly reject ban on women pastors
BBC News / Washington ^ | 6/12/2024 | Brandon Drenon

The Southern Baptist church has narrowly rejected a proposal to ban women as pastors.

Members voted 61.4% to 38.3% in favour of a ban. However, a two-thirds majority was required to amend the church's constitution.

The proposed amendment, which stated that “only men” could hold the role, would have affected women at hundreds of the church's 47,000 places of worship.

The Southern Baptist Convention and its nearly 13 million church members are mostly a conservative voting bloc in American elections.

The vote's failure is a blow to the group's hard-right faction, which has been vying for influence.

In a written statement, Meredith Stone, the executive director of Baptist Women in Ministry, said she was "grieved" but "grateful" for the result of the vote in Indianapolis, Indiana.

"Even though the amendment did not pass, we are also grieved that this vote has ever even taken place," she said.

The amendment still received a majority vote, a fact that Ms Stone said "demonstrates that women in ministry are still devalued".

All this vote proves is that the 19th amendment was a mistake.

“Meredith Stone, the executive director of Baptist Women in Ministry, said...”demonstrates that women in ministry are still devalued”.

She is an example of why it NEEDED to pass! We can listen to the Apostle Paul or Meredith Stone...

Godly men should always be the minister of a church, but women can minister to women and we all can minister to everyone, in our lives.

The vote's failure is a blow to the group's hard-right Scripture-following faction

Money paragraph:

“Proponents of the amendment say opposition to women pastors makes the church’s position more clear on progressivism, such as LGBT rights.”

gays once again trying to trash the Christian faith.

Remember when they said they just wanted to be left alone?

The SBC keeps adding wedges to pull their coalition apart, just like the old denominations have done.

Next, the factions will head off in separate directions, and the liberal groups will go full-on woke.

1 Timothy 2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. 12But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. 13For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 14And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. 15Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

There should be a split. Like what is happening with the Methodist Church.

If women feel called by God to preach the word of The Lord, then let them preach it! Christianity is under attack in America. We need all the sincere reinforcements we can get.
Traditional ways are not the only ways to accomplish the same goals. They are not always taking positions away from men.

So long as it is God they are praising, and not something secular or personal, such as LGBT etc, etc.

Thanks for the scripture. I am not a sexist, but the bible says what the bible says. The scripture says man. I do not have a problem with women teaching male children in Sunday school, but I wonder how this verse applies.

That the vote was this close and even won a seat at the debate table does not bode well for the SBC. They have been slowly apostatizing for decades.

“The vote’s failure is a blow to the group’s hard-right faction..”
Hard right faction? You mean people who read and understand the Bible?

If Ms. Stone reads her Bible, she would notice that there are no women Apostles or Pastors. The spirit of feminism and the god of 'what's popular in the culture' have corrupted many of today's churches and denominations. The church is not a democracy. The church is not a republican (small r) form of government. The church is meant to influence the world not the other way around.

If Peter, John and Paul visited many of today's churches - you can be assured there would be a whole lot of correction!

"I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control. - 1 Tim 2:8-15
