Pope Francis said his conservative critics within the Roman Catholic Church in the United States are trapped in a "suicidal attitude," according to an interview with CBS.
During the April 24 interview with "60 Minutes" that will air this Sunday, Pope Francis was asked his thoughts on the conservative backlash against his papacy, with many of his critics being American clergy members.
Pope Francis responded by saying a conservative is someone who "clings to something and does not want to see beyond that."
"It is a suicidal attitude," the pontiff said, according to a brief transcript excerpt made available by CBS Thursday.
"Because one thing is to take tradition into account, to consider situations from the past, but quite another is to be closed up inside a dogmatic box." Pope Francis has clashed with the conservative wing almost since he was elected as head of the church in 2013.
Moves conservatives have opposed include papal attempts to make the church more welcoming to the LGBT community and to give lay people more responsibility in the church.
Francis last year dismissed a conservative U.S. bishop who was a withering critic of his papacy, and said the conservative wing in the U.S. church was "reactionary." He also stripped a conservative American cardinal of some Vatican privileges.

“clings to something and does not want to see beyond that.”
Pope Francis
“They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion”
Barak Obama
Lots of clinging going on out there.
People just are not aware of the wonderful utopia that awaits if we would only do as the “experts” and “authorities” tell us to.
"They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
He likely would have thought Christ was suicidal.
Friendship with the world is enmity with God.
Bergoglio is projecting.
What’s in the hearts and minds of “conservatives” is not on trial here.
Instead, those who try with all their might to mangle Holy Mother Church and snuff out piety and belief among her members are the ones who deserve scrutiny and trial.
What religion are you? BETCHA you dont answer me truthfully....or at all.
ALL churches, and all men, are “satan-influenced” as you say.
Watch your mouth in the future in implying it is only the Catholic church that is/
satan influences all the world
Never ever ever piss off an American altar boy.
Interesting. Compare this to what an Imam, or Islam, in general, may teach...and it’d appear that the suicide he speaks of is really a death of the church he leads, by his own hand. Now, I wonder how he would reconcile his embrace of the co-exist with Islam philosophy when they are the most “conservative” of any religion...
No, no, pedo protector; what they want is for YOU to suicide.
I wish somebody in this article was dead and it ain’t me.
He always sounds like someone who does not believe in God, but believes in the inherent goodness of humanity. But it is our desire to follow God’s guidance that humanity achieves goodness. Sure, there are many who are not religious who are good people, but even they have had the benefit of the teaching of God’s will, and the benefit of religious based institutions.
poop Francis is full of...well poop.
ah but they DO see beyond because the veil is transparent.
They should reply “As an American, I consider it an honor to be attacked by this pope”.
I truly hate the antipope.
Please don’t hate him. That puts a bitterness in your own heart that you do not need to suffer with. Pray for his conversion of heart. All things are possible with God. Personally I disdain the man. But I have to pray for his soul. Please God, change his heart. Make him the man and the leader that You would have him be.
There is comfort in knowing that Jorge Bergoglio is not the pope. We are in an “inter-regnum.”
Pope Benedict was still alive at the time of the last conclave making the conclave and Bergoglio’s election invalid.
Hopefully, a faithful, Catholic shepherd will be elected in the next conclave, the next *valid* conclave, that is.
Pray for Cardinal Sarah.
.
He is a boomer, seeing the RCC start to go back to what he thought he had destroyed.
We have the same in my Lutheran synod. The old timers are mad that the younger generation wants liturgy, bells, and smells.
I am not found of the incense.
