Man claims more than 50 children were sexually abused by 'paedophile' catholic monks on UK holy island in scandal as bad as 'Jimmy Savile' as new probe launched

A community of Catholic monks on a reputably 'holy island' off the coast of Wales is at the centre of a major child abuse scandal going back more than 50 years.

Thousands of tourists visit Caldey off the Pembrokeshire coast each year unaware of its dark history of sex abuse against infants as young as three.

Visiting children, who have now grown to adults, say they were raped in the historic abbey, sexually abused in the ornate gardens and threatened that they would go to hell if they breathed a word to anyone back on the mainland.

This week, The Caldey Abbey estate has appointed Independent Safeguarding Consultant and former Assistant Police & Crime Commissioner for South Wales, Jan Pickles OBE to lead a 'thorough review' into historical claims of child abuse.

Speaking to MailOnline, Victim Kevin O'Connell, 61, just 10 when he was raped, claims he witnessed the 'industrial abuse' of children, some as young as three.

He put out an appeal on social media urging others to come forward to help his lifelong fight for justice.

Reminiscent of the “mass graves” of indigenous children at Catholic Canadian orphanages.

The story would have more credibility if he didn't claim witnessing "industrial abuse". "Industrial abuse" would have been impossible to cover up.

"Victims" have lots of monetary and status reasons to claim "victimhood".

There are, no doubt, real victims. Perfect societies do not exist. There are, no doubt, "victims" who are cashing in for money, fame, and status.

A story from 2022 which has been completely discredited. There are no bodies in those “mass graves”.

The mental disconnect is jarring.
The Rotherham scandal was “nothing” according to them but this is “real stuff”.
They wanted people to be charged with hate crimes for mentioning Rotherham.

Residential school deniers tried to dig up suspected unmarked grave sites at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, not believing a May 2021 announcement from the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc that as many as 215 Indigenous children had been buried there, according to a new report.

“Denialists entered the site without permission. Some came in the middle of the night, carrying shovels; they said they wanted to ‘see for themselves’ if children are buried there,” said a Friday report from Kimberly Murray, the independent special interlocutor for missing children and unmarked graves and burial sites associated with Indian Residential Schools.

She did not say who the denialists were or when they came to the site.

But the unauthorized visits to the site are the work of a “core group” of Canadians who continue to deny, defend or minimize the physical, sexual, psychological and emotional abuse inflicted on Indigenous children in the Indian Residential School System “despite the indisputable evidence of survivors and their families,” Murray said at a Friday news conference.

Other uninvited visitors, including denialists and some members of the media, were disrespectful of the site, breaching cultural protocols and taking videos and pictures of the burial area without permission, the report found.

Since the confirmation of community knowledge of suspected unmarked graves in Kamloops, First Nations across Canada have located evidence of the remains of more than 2,300 children in suspected unmarked graves at or near former residential schools and Indian hospitals, according to the report.

Denialism and disrespect exacerbate the pain and trauma of survivors and community members trying to grieve and search the grave sites, Murray said.

Citing international experts, Murray called denialism “the last step in genocide.”

“Denialism is violence. Denialism is calculated. Denialism is harmful. Denialism is hate,” Murray said.

Kimberly Murray will serve as special interlocutor to co-ordinate the government’s response to unmarked graves that have been identified at a number of former residential school sites.

Calls for non-Indigenous Canadians to counter denialism

Murray’s interim report detailed denialism and other challenges that remain for Indigenous families and communities trying to search for unmarked graves.
She called on non-Indigenous Canadians to counter residential school denialism at every opportunity.

“Denialism is a non-Indigenous problem and therefore it’s for non-Indigenous people to address it,” said Murray.

On Friday, federal Justice Minister David Lametti said he was open to outlawing residential school denialism with similar criminal and civil measures to those used to punish people who deny, minimize or condone the Holocaust.

“I just simply can’t imagine the devastating impact that it would have on a survivor, or on a family, or a community that has seen this directly,” Lametti said Friday.

“I pledge to do my best here.”

Denialists targeted First Nations across Canada

Since findings from Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc were leaked in May 2021, the community and others have faced an outpouring of denialism from some Canadians and media outlets.

A May 2022 New York Post headline called the suspected unmarked graves the “biggest fake news story in Canada.”

Kúkpi7 Rosanne Casimir, elected chief of Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, says she stopped being able to use social media without “heavy filters” due to the hate and racism that inundated her and others in the community in the wake of the findings, according to Murray’s Friday report.

Casimir did not return a request for comment before publication.

After the Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan announced at least 751 potential unmarked graves near the former Marieval Indian Residential School, the most located at a single site, Barbara Lavallee, residential school survivor and lead researcher for the Nation said the community was also targeted with denialism.

“Many communities have had to adopt security measures to keep trespassers off the burial grounds,” Murray said on Friday.

Her office’s report highlighted recommendations from Casimir that communities be in charge of when and how to share information about unmarked graves, set boundaries and protocols with media and support the people who will be most impacted by the information.

“This is more than a media story whose time is coming and going, we have to ensure justice and accountability keeps going in the long-term,” Casimir said in the report.

Ever hear of McMartin Preschool? There were others like it during the “Child Sex Abuse Crusades” of the 80s. Almost everyone accused was exonerated but years later. So forgive some of us if we don’t automatically believe ppl who come forward with such outlandish stories decades later, especially if lawsuits for “pain and suffering” are involved.

Aw, the infamous “Media Guide” to sex abuse with a spotlight on Catholic priests. If you believed that BS you’d think every priest is a pedophile.

For the record, in 2002 the NY Times posted the results of a huge study they conducted on the subject going back 50 yrs. There were approximately 100,000 priests during that time frame, of which found 2.5% either plead guilty to or were credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. The majority of those cases actually involved adolescent boys, which could be due to the fact that the Church relaxed their standards for the priesthood in the 50s/60s, allowing homosexuals to infiltrate.

I’m a cradle Catholic and as a teen I came into contact with a few priests that we knew better than to be alone with. That occurs in every position of power, including protestant sects and in education. I’m sure it happens in mosques and madrassas but nobody has the guts to bring that up. It’s so much easier to go after Christians.

The bottom line is we’re all mortal with feet of clay and nobody should trust their elders 100%.

You sure like to cut and paste, don’t you? Most of us outgrew that fetish in elementary school, and we sure wouldn’t use outdated material because there were no bodies recovered from that site. It was a hoax and not only did you fall for it, you perpetuated it here, FFS.

Just a few points on this.

This goes back 50 years. In some of the comments it goes back over 70 years. We can't talk about how much better people were "back then."

Once again, men who knew all of this was going on did nothing.

And last, when are men going to learn to stop thinking with their "manhood"?

I don’t believe 99% of what the press says either, but the record of the Catholic priesthood’s perversions has been well documented and proven over the years. It’s not a myth. Just look at the sick freak in the picture.

I detect your hatred of Catholic priests, but the fact is that school teachers have a far higher rate of child molestation.

PS - The Catholic Church does not have a pedophile priest problem, it has a homosexual predator priest problem.

I don’t hate Catholic priests. Just the as you say “ homosexual predator” ones.
I am Catholic, or at least, raised Catholic and have known many fine priests, but sorry to say, the priesthood tends to be attractive to a certain type of individual. I find the whole concept of forgoing sexuality and being “married” to God quite weird.

Three points -

1. Celibacy among the clergy is purely for the Latin rite Catholic clergy - and is a discipline, not dogma

2. The Church since the 1990s (too late I agree) has rooted out the ways in which people which such tendencies have joined. It is also strangely “helped” by the current cultural acceptance of these proclivities so men with such, ahem, proclivities, now go elsewhere.

3. I’ve noted that due to the scandals, the only men who join the priesthood today are those who KNOW they will be cursed and suspected and even then join because they truly have a calling.
