Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Acts 15
Disagreement Between Paul and Barnabas
36 Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing.” 37 Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, 38 but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord. 41 He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our God and Heavenly Father,
How Holy is Your Name!
Thank You For Your Deliverance,
From The Slavery of Sin and Death
From The Dark Night of Unbelief,
And From the Clutches of the Enemy of our Soul.
Thank You for Loving Us
Just as We Are.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

I got into a "discussion" on another thread about Paul. The person with whom I was debating stated that many Bible Scholars consider Paul to be a "disagreeable" person, based upon some of his writings, and the incident in Today's Reading in particular. Paul was so adamant about not taking John Mark along on the next journey because John Mark had "bailed" on him back in Antioch. I countered that Paul was intolerant of disloyalty, being left in the lurch, betrayal, and other forms of being deserted, and I didn't blame him. I also pointed out that, in his later letters, Paul not only forgives John Mark, but expresses true affection for him. He also sings the praises of Barnabas, so this falling out didn't last forever. Anyway, there were no winners or losers in my debate, but I also think that neither of us persuaded the other to change our opinion about Paul. Nevertheless, we are still friends. Would that all conflicts could be settled as easily!
Paul felt that Mark had "deserted" him on their last journey. Barnabas, ever the encourager, saw it differently. Why, you may ask, would the Bible include these icky details about conflict and pique when it is supposed to be telling a heroic story? My personal take is because it is the unvarnished truth. Real life has these kinds of nasty little details.
Groucho Marx had a saying that he wouldn't want to be a member of any organization that would have HIM as a member! We laugh at that, but the truth is that ALL organizations have people in them with whom we will have conflicts. The Early Church was no different. After a rebuke from Paul, one could infer that John Mark was "washed up" as an Apostle. But tradition tells us that Mark eventually traveled to Egypt, Italy, and other places, and wrote one of the Four Gospels. In fact, Mark's Gospel is considered the oldest of the Four.
Barnabas really "steps up to the plate" in defense of Mark, and lives up to his nickname "Son of Encouragement".
And THAT is why Barnabas is one of my favorite people in the Book of Acts.
There is no such thing as a "Perfect Church". Well, perhaps it could be perfect, but then I show up and ruin everything (LOL...that's a JOKE. Don't get upset.) Of course, if there is some bizarre anti-biblical doctrine being preached, or abuse taking place, RUN! But, more often, church splits and failures are due to Personality Conflicts. This is the first one recorded in the History of the Christian Church. It didn't take long! But Scripture also gives us the resolution, and doesn't leave us hanging. Paul, Mark, and Barnabas are ALL reconciled in the end.

Psalm 16
A Miktam of David.
1 Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.’*
3 As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble,
in whom is all my delight.
4 Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows;*
their drink-offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names upon my lips.
5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
I have a goodly heritage.
7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
8 I keep the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
my body also rests secure.
10 For you do not give me up to Sheol,
or let your faithful one see the Pit.
11 You show me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Bad joke coming:
With all the bluster in the news about the rift in the Royal Family with Meghan Markle, I wonder if this disagreement between Paul and Mark is the first case of being “Markled.”
