John 13

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him,[c] God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.

33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.

Last week, Songwriter Jimmy Buffet passed away after a long battle with skin cancer. A prolific writer of fun songs that extolled the joys of living in the Tropical Sunshine, it was a sad but ironic ending for a cultural icon. Naturally, every musician in our community honored his memory by singing his songs, as there were plenty to go around. This summer, it was as hot as the Tropics in New England, but without the Palm Trees or Tradewinds. Buffet's songs evoked a somewhat skewed version of what it's like to live in "Paradise".

Last night, at Open Mike, everybody seemed to be playing songs by Billy Joel. "Oh NO!" I thought. "Did Billy Joel pass away?" The only song I knew on guitar was "You May Be Right", and I scrambled to find the lyrics. Meanwhile, the host was now launching into "We Didn't Start The Fire", which is a very wordy song chronicling the 50's, 60's, and 70's. It's a very complex song, on the order of something by Gilbert & Sullivan, but I was probably the only one in the room who got all the references. (Thalidomide, Bay of Pigs, Kerouac, etc). My time was approaching, and I ran the chords in my head one more time. It was now my turn to pay my tribute to the legendary Rock Musician. As I approached the stage, I whispered to a friend, "I am so sad to hear of Billy Joel's passing."

"Billy Joel isn't dead! Nick just learned a bunch of his songs and wanted to try them out tonight!"

Hoo Boy! Did I feel foolish! But I did the song anyway. At least I didn't preface it with a memorial speech! This was a perfect lesson about speaking without thinking first or getting the facts.

In today's reading we see Peter, being Peter. He was known for jumping to conclusions before he got all the facts. At the Last Supper, he declares that he will follow Jesus even to his death, but when the moment arrives for him to back up his claim, he fails miserably.

In the Gospel of John, we are treated to the scene where Jesus restores Peter, but it isn't until Peter is filled with the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost that he actually has the boldness to stand up for Jesus.

Early writings on the Lives of the saints show that Peter did, indeed, follow Christ to his death.
