Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 23

The Burial of Jesus

50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our LORD,
Heavenly Father,
You Are Our Dwelling Place,
And Have been Throughout Generations!
You Are Our Shelter,
Our Home.
How we Long For, and Hope for Your Grace and Comfort
During these times of sorrow and distress!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Roz was the only black child in our entire elementary school, in a mostly Irish/Italian/Jewish Boston neighborhood. From Kindergarten to the sixth grade, Roz stood out because of the color of her skin, and it didn't help matters that she was a big girl as well. Some of us other kids tried to befriend Roz, but she seemed intimidated by us and put on a facade of being haughty and belligerent. I felt bad because I was kind of lonely and isolated too, mostly because of my own haughty behavior (I was an A Student, and I didn't even have to try.) When Roz entered the Sixth Grade, her little sister Mae entered Kindergarten, so, for one precious year, Roz was not alone. After Sixth Grade, Roz went off to Jr. High School, and Mae went through the exact same thing for six years, until she, too, matriculated to the next level.

Loneliness and Bullying don't always happen because of race. There was one little girl, a Jehovah's Witness, who wasn't allowed to salute the Flag. There she stood, every morning, with her hands held at her side, while the entire school recited the Pledge. I was bullied because I was smart, but also because I wore "hand-me-downs". (Never-mind that these were from the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis...that's a whole other story! Now I've gone and done it! I will have to share that story someday.)

The Elementary School in this story is in a Boston neighborhood that has undergone demographic changes, and is now 100% African-American and Caribbean children. An Irish, Italian, or Jewish child would find herself in Roz's situation sixty-five years ago. I would have stuck out like a sore thumb!

From a very early age, I learned that it is very difficult to be the ONLY one of ANYTHING, Anywhere.

Joseph of Arimathea found himself in such a situation. For a brief period, he may not have been totally alone, as we will read in John 3 about Nicodemus. Joseph may not have been present when Jesus was condemned by the Sanhedrin, as the Gospels say that Everybody on the Council voted against Jesus. Maybe he did vote against Jesus, but when he saw the brutal result of the vote, may have had a change of heart. All we know is what the Gospels tell us. The rest is speculation.

So, for a while, Joseph was like Roz, the only one who was different.

Like most wealthy people, Joseph had looked ahead to providing for his family after his death. In our own time, we have Life Insurance, Pre-Paid Funerals, Cemetery Lots purchased in advance, and so on. Joseph had a freshly built tomb in a garden that would be for himself and others in his family. It was brand new and just waiting for its first "occupant".

Usually, the bodies of executed criminals were just dumped in the Hinnom Valley and left to scavengers. But Joseph did something that really made him stand out. He asked for the body of Jesus, and laid the body in his own tomb.

The Bible doesn't record the reaction of the Council to this action by one of their members, but it must have made him stick out like a sore thumb.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Psalm 105

1 O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name,
make known his deeds among the peoples.
2 Sing to him, sing praises to him;
tell of all his wonderful works.
3 Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
4 Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his presence continually.
5 Remember the wonderful works he has done,
his miracles, and the judgements he has uttered,
6 O offspring of his servant Abraham,*
children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

7 He is the Lord our God;
his judgements are in all the earth.
8 He is mindful of his covenant for ever,
of the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,
9 the covenant that he made with Abraham,
his sworn promise to Isaac,
10 which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
11 saying, ‘To you I will give the land of Canaan
as your portion for an inheritance.’

12 When they were few in number,
of little account, and strangers in it,
13 wandering from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another people,
14 he allowed no one to oppress them;
he rebuked kings on their account,
15 saying, ‘Do not touch my anointed ones;
do my prophets no harm.’

16 When he summoned famine against the land,
and broke every staff of bread,
17 he had sent a man ahead of them,
Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
18 His feet were hurt with fetters,
his neck was put in a collar of iron;
19 until what he had said came to pass,
the word of the Lord kept testing him.
20 The king sent and released him;
the ruler of the peoples set him free.
21 He made him lord of his house,
and ruler of all his possessions,
22 to instruct* his officials at his pleasure,
and to teach his elders wisdom.

23 Then Israel came to Egypt;
Jacob lived as an alien in the land of Ham.
24 And the Lord made his people very fruitful,
and made them stronger than their foes,
25 whose hearts he then turned to hate his people,
to deal craftily with his servants.

26 He sent his servant Moses,
and Aaron whom he had chosen.
27 They performed his signs among them,
and miracles in the land of Ham.
28 He sent darkness, and made the land dark;
they rebelled* against his words.
29 He turned their waters into blood,
and caused their fish to die.
30 Their land swarmed with frogs,
even in the chambers of their kings.
31 He spoke, and there came swarms of flies,
and gnats throughout their country.
32 He gave them hail for rain,
and lightning that flashed through their land.
33 He struck their vines and fig trees,
and shattered the trees of their country.
34 He spoke, and the locusts came,
and young locusts without number;
35 they devoured all the vegetation in their land,
and ate up the fruit of their ground.
36 He struck down all the firstborn in their land,
the first issue of all their strength.

37 Then he brought Israel* out with silver and gold,
and there was no one among their tribes who stumbled.
38 Egypt was glad when they departed,
for dread of them had fallen upon it.
39 He spread a cloud for a covering,
and fire to give light by night.
40 They asked, and he brought quails,
and gave them food from heaven in abundance.
41 He opened the rock, and water gushed out;
it flowed through the desert like a river.
42 For he remembered his holy promise,
and Abraham, his servant.

43 So he brought his people out with joy,
his chosen ones with singing.
44 He gave them the lands of the nations,
and they took possession of the wealth of the peoples,
45 that they might keep his statutes
and observe his laws.
Praise the Lord!

And Joseph fulfilled prophesy with his tomb:

He {Jesus) was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
Isaiah 53:9
