Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 18

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Our Father in Heaven,
Hallowed be Your Name!
You Alone Are Worthy Of Praise and Worship,
You Alone Are The One True God
Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent, and Transcendent,
Yet You Condescend to touch the Lives of those who love You!
Oh, the hubris of humanity!
That we think we can run things without You.
Wealth, Fame and Fortune are all nothing,
Political Power is easily toppled,
Physical beauty is fleeting,
And youth is just for a time,
And then it is gone.
The earth is Yours,
And The fullness thereof.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

The Vice Principle of a certain school incurred the wrath of the parents which resulted in a meeting. The VP had eliminated ALL sports from the curriculum, banned recess, and issued a decree that separated the children from each other socially. Whether it was COVID that brought about these edicts or the VP's own fears was unclear, but it was ridiculous. The parents rose in protest, in favor of their children being free to be kids without all these new regulations that didn't exist in the other schools in the district.

The VP took umbrage, stood up before the parents, and said:

"I quit! I don't feel SAFE here."

Some of the parents cheered. There is now a job opening. I hope the next VP is not so "woke".

I do not know the origin of the following parable, but it was recently posted on this site. At first, as you read it, you may think that it would have fit in better with yesterday's posting about RED TAPE. It goes with today's story as well. Here it is:

THE NIGHT WATCHMAN

Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert.

Congress said, “Someone may steal from it at night.”

So they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job. Then Congress said, “How does the watchman do his job without instruction?” So they created a planning department and hired two people, one person to write the instructions, and one person to do time studies.

Then Congress said, “How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?”

So they created a Quality Control department and hired two people. One was to do the studies and one was to write the reports.

Then Congress said, “How are these people going to get paid?”

So they created two positions: a time keeper and a payroll officer then hired two people.

Then Congress said, “Who will be accountable for all of these people?”

So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer, and a Legal Secretary. Then Congress said, “We have had this command in operation for one year and we are $918,000 over budget, we must cut back.”

So they laid-off the night watchman.

God Gave Moses Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. There are also 613 Laws in the Torah, regarding Sexual and Family issues, Property Issues, Agricultural Issues, Crime, and Punishment. There are a number of Laws regarding certain Clothing Articles, Inheritance, Taxes, and, Ceremonial Procedures. That's a lot of Laws.

Most people would be content to try to live with the Ten Commandments, but even those are too much. Jesus said that the breaking of just ONE constitutes breaking them ALL.

The Pharisees had an ingenious way of ensuring that the Law was kept. Although the Torah did not command Fasting except on the Day of Atonement, the Pharisees fasted twice a week. Not only did this particular Pharisee tithe his earnings, but tithed everything he had. In other places in the Gospels, we read about Pharisees sipping their drinks through a strainer so as to prevent the ingestion of a gnat (which was considered unclean), and measuring even the spices they cooked with in order to tithe them. They were making up new laws to prevent the accidental breaking of the REAL ones.

I don't want you to think I am picking on the Pharisees for doing this. Remember the apocryphal tale of the Nuns telling girls not to wear patent leather shoes because they could reflect your underwear in the shiny surface? (I am not making this up).

Now lest you think I am some kind of outlaw, let me clarify that certain laws are necessary for society to function. But laws that are set in place to ensure compliance with other laws become ridiculous, especially when Jesus said that all the Law can be boiled down to two: Love God and Love Your Neighbor. When those two are solid, a person doesn't even want to sin, not against God, and not against other people.

The Story of The Pharisee and The Publican tells us in one paragraph how we should have relationship with God and Our Neighbor. If we are not sinners, why would we need a Savior? It seems like a simple question, but Self-Righteousness will always blind a person to the answer.
