Luke 9

Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy

37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”

41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”

42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.

Tippy, the Aussie Cattle Dog, loves doggie toys. She plays constantly. We joke that she is "part Tasmanian Devil", because she shakes and shreds her toys like the WB Cartoon Character. Just as the Cartoon Character is soothed by music, Tippy responds to music as well, but she seems to like only Bach.

Cheap doggie toys are no good, because, within minutes, there is stuffing and shredded fabric all over the house. Rubber, leather, bone, and nylon products all suffer the same fate. The only toys that last with her are made from the same material that fire hoses are made from, and even these only last a few months, and then are so shredded that they are no longer safe toys.

I can get these somewhat inexpensively at the store my sister works at, and then her employee discount helps too. I would hate to deny Tippy the insane pleasure she gets from "killing" the Super-Durable, Fire-Hose Material, Double Seamed, Tough-Lined, Invincible, Purple, Snake.

The Gospels tell us of Jesus sending out His disciples to preach, teach, heal, and deliver people from demons. Once again, the Gospels show us that these four functions were separate from each other. Some afflictions are caused by chemical imbalance, some by microbes, some by biological issues, and some by injury. Others are caused by stress and anxiety. We call those "Psychosomatic" illnesses, and are as real and debilitating as the diseases caused by viruses. Finally, there are the afflictions caused by spiritual entities. Dr. Luke, an educated, erudite, and brilliant Medical Doctor, had no trouble seeing the difference.

The disciples were now considered "apostles" as they were being sent out in the field to do mighty works of God. There were 70 of them, and this included the Twelve "Upper Case" Apostles whom Jesus chose to be the Founders of his Church. But neither the lower case nor upper case apostles could handle this unfortunate little boy. Whatever had gotten hold of the poor child was a "Super-Durable, Fire-Hose Material, Double Seamed, Tough-Lined, Invincible, Purple, Snake', and was throwing the boy into seizures. The apostles tried, but they couldn't budge the monster.

Jesus performs the exorcism, but His reaction to the apostles' failure is one of the most humorous in the Gospels. It is the equivalent to:

"How much longer do I have to put up with you guys?!?"

This implies to me that Jesus was well aware that the apostles should have been able to exorcise this demon, because, in Christ, they could do all things. Their inability was caused by their own self-set limitations. This could be because they were trying to use their own power and not relying TOTALLY upon the Power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus wasn't lamenting their incompetence, but rather their lack of faith.

PS: I just replaced Tippy's Super-Durable, Fire-Hose Material, Double Seamed, Tough-Lined, Invincible, Purple, Snake. Her old one had to be discarded, as she finally "killed" it.
