46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

One of the features of my mobile home that caused me to want it was a 45' x 6' open deck that extended the entire length of the trailer. It was on a side where an addition had been added, and was wood construction, unlike the rest of the trailer. Unfortunately, the addition had a flat rubber roof that collected water, snow, tree branches and leaves. It was beginning to look like the Everglades up there, so I began to ask around to find a contractor who would put on a pitched roof and extend it over the deck to make it a covered porch. A bunch of guys refused, saying, A roof would be too heavy, the deck won't support it, I don't do trailers, etc. I was getting very frustrated until I spoke to Jim(RIP). He said he would check it out.

Upon inspection, Jim determined that the footings on the deck not only exceeded the building codes, but were rated to hold up a roof twice the size. This was a mystery as to why anyone would build such an amazing deck onto an addition to a single-wide 50-year-old trailer, but there it was. In one of my many stories, I related how a seven-year-old uncashed insurance check arrived in my mailbox for the exact amount of Jim's estimate. So he went to work and constructed a roofed deck that is the pride of the neighborhood.

A neighbor told me a story that explained the super-supported deck. In 2014, the was TEN FEET of snow stuck on the flat roof of the addition. A bunch of neighbors climbed up and shoveled all the snow off the flat roof, and ONTO the existing deck. All that snow caused the deck to collapse, taking big chunks of wall and siding with it. A new deck was constructed, but with huge, deep, footings less than the required 6' apart. The footings were three feet apart, and made of reinforced concrete. They could have held up the Great Pyramid and were a classic case of overkill. But that's OK because now I have a beautiful roofed deck that will never collect snow again.

Another deck story occurred in 2014 in Miami at a restaurant called "Shuckers". The deck was over water, and a sports celebration turned into tragedy when the guests were watching a Miami Heat Basketball game. The Heat scored an important basket, and the entire crowd rose to its feet to cheer. The deck collapsed under them, injuring 33 people. The deck may have been able to support one or two fans leaping to their feet, but when the entire crowd did it at the same time, the deck collapsed.

Jesus tells the story of the wise and foolish builders because He knew we would encounter big storms in life. While a flat roof could handle a normal New England Winter, ten feet of snow was excessive. While the Miami deck could support a few enthusiastic sports fans, the entire population of the restaurant jumping up at the same time was too much. When we encounter small opposition, or light-hearted teasing because of our faith, it doesn't take much to fend it off. But, when the onslaught is a massive storm of opposition, we need to make sure that our Foundation is Sure. Building a Faith based on Tradition, National Heritage, Family Ties, and even Intellectual Agreement is fine when things are going well. When the REAL storms come, though, it is a true test of one's Foundation. The only Foundation that will last through real persecution is Jesus Christ.
