The president made the comments in the course of Tuesday’s address to the Federal Assembly – a speech to lawmakers which focused on the crisis in ties between Moscow and the West – and the ongoing Russia-NATO proxy conflict in Ukraine.
The West is waging an aggressive information and culture war against Russia, and Moscow cannot allow its young people to fall victim to the kind of spiritual “degradation and degeneration” that has already befallen many Western countries, President Vladimir Putin has said.
“They can’t help but realize that it’s not possible to defeat Russia on the battlefield, and so they are carrying out ever-more aggressive information attacks against us. The chosen target is, first and foremost, our young people, the younger generations. And here again they lie constantly, distort historical facts, engage in non-stop attacks on our culture, on the Russian Orthodox Church, and other traditional religious organizations of our country,” Putin said during his speech to the Federal Assembly on Tuesday.
“Look at what they’re doing to their own peoples: the destruction of the family, of cultural and national identity, perversions and abuses against children, up to pedophilia, are declared to the norm, the norm of their lives, while clergymen and priests are forced to bless same-sex marriages,” Putin said.
The president emphasized that in Russia the position on gay rights is and has always been that consenting adults have the right to live their lives as they like, and the government cannot intrude on someone’s private life. “But I would like to tell them: look, please forgive me, to the holy scriptures – the main texts of all of the world’s religions. Everything is explained there, including that a family is the union of a man and a woman. But even these holy texts are now.......

Putin THINKS he understands the West.
He’s wrong.
We have made a culture that most other countries want nothing to do with.
And half. Our country wants nothing to do with it either.
Can you blame him?
Here’s the really depressing thing. Putin is absolutely correct on cultural issues. 100% correct. He gets how “progressive” rot can literally destroy a country.
But then Putin went and started a war. He sent his troops across a sovereign border. That action completely overshadows his position on cultural issues.
Was Putin justified in starting that war? It doesn’t matter for the purpose of this discussion! What matters is that the war has caused people to ignore everything Putin says.
I can’t blame those folks. But it’s a shame for Western civilization.
No, I’m pretty sure he’s right about the West when it comes to the LGBT stuff.

Bottom line, we are so lied to I don’t know what to believe.
You have to qualify culture.
As a general matter “western” culture is dominant the world over. Technology, science, city planning, educational systems, curricula, consumerism, government structure, bureaucratic systems, political ideologies, even art, clothing music and dance styles everywhere are heavily “western”. Europe/America conquered the world and remade it in their image - with the usually enthusiastic assistance of the natives.
Now you have second order waves of influence from parts of the world riffing on Western models, going global themselves, such as Japanese Sci fi or Korean pop.
What Putin is on about are latter day western fads. The world’s peoples aren’t abandoning trousers.
American culture has gone ghetto.

That’s been so for a long time now.
But a lot of the ghetto sells very well abroad. Cleaned up some, and, when copied, usually with fewer black people involved, but there you go.

Ukrainian corruption - and our involvement in it - that’s something that should not be ignored. No doubt about it! So I would have zero patience should a Ukrainian official decide to lecture me about ethics.
The problem is that Putin does not have clean hands either. He started a war. People who start a war had better have a damn good reason for doing so. Putin did not have that reason. And by the way, neither did Bush II when he invaded Iraq. I put Putin and Bush II in the same boat. Both are war criminals.
Of course your mileage may vary.
And as a side note, this whole thing pains me. I have no Russian blood in me. But I have a deep respect for the Russian people. And I understand all the misery they have endured from western invasions (first by Napoleon, then by Kaiser Wilhelm II, and then by Hitler).
So, yeah. I get that Russia is suspicious of the west. But I can’t accept that it’s enough to start a war.
Now that being said, LOL, Russian culture leaves a lot to be desired in some areas.

If one digs more, one then finds that the cultural view is compatible with the Ukraine issue. Very much so. But, one has to dig a bit.
The progressive rot applies to Ukraine, and behind that, the US.
This war did NOT start a year ago. It goes further back, to at least 2014, if not much further...

I totally agree. But it’s not the job of one country (Russia) to clean out the rot in another country (Ukraine). It’s an internal thing. It’s up to the citizens of Ukraine to clean out the rot in their own country. Or not.
In 5 years trousers will be considered a symbol slavery or racism.

It defies credulity to me that anyone can believe the evil killer putin cares about anyone! His military rapes, tortures and kills innocents. His barbarity in Ukraine is demonic.
