Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 6
A Prophet Without Honor
6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.
“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
How We Love You,
With Our Whole Heart,
Our Whole Soul,
Our Whole Mind,
and Our Whole Strength!
For Only You Are Worthy To Be Praised and Worshiped.
Only You Are Holy,
Almighty, and Eternal!
The Nations are Merely Dust To You,
And We, The Work of Your Hands,
Must Bow Our Heads in Worship and Admiration,
and Awe at Your Great Glory!
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

A common theme that has appeared throughout the thirteen-year life of this Thread is that there are NO COINCIDENCES. With that in mind, here are today's stories:
1. Injured Knees and Broken Fixtures: A few of you may know that I injured my knee about a month ago. Knees in pain can be hard to manage, as we use them MUCH more than we realize. In the past month, I have used every device and medication available, and it still hurts, especially when rising from a sitting position.
When a light bulb needed replacing in a Carriage lantern in my mudroom, I climbed up the stepladder, with my hurting knee and attempted to replace the light bulb. The light bulb broke off in my hand, and left the end of the bulb in the scket. I climbed down the ladder and got some needle-nose pliers. After making sure the electricity was OFF, I climbed up again and tried to extract the rest of the bulb from the socket. It was at such an awkward angle that I manged to destroy the entire fixture. It crumbled in my hand. Climbing down the ladder, I re-injured my knee.
Grrrrr. BOTH fixtures would need replacing, or else they wouldn't match, so I hobbled to the store and bought two matching lanterns.
I do a lot of home maintenance myself, but I draw the line at Plumbing, Electricity, and Gas-fitting. So I called Kevin, my Electrician, and explained the Problem. Normally, at this time of year, Kevin would be busy wiring up the stages for the HUGE Music Festival (The Holy Grail for the South Shore Music Community), and he would not have time for a little job like my Porch Lights. But, since he had RECENTLY INJURED HIS KNEE, he had time for me. Also, it was nice and warm, so he would not be doing electrical work in the freezing cold.
2. The Painting: As Kevin was installing my new Lanterns (and retrofitting the previous hack job on the wiring), he noticed a painting on the wall. It was an oil painting I had done when I was 15, of a Cottage on a Pond, that my family had rented every July back in the 1960's. He recognized it as a place where HE had spent his childhood summers, water skiing and boating on the SAME Pond. We had a good laugh over that.
3. The Old Neighborhood: Somehow that conversation led us to talking about our "Old neighborhoods" and he asked me if I had ever heard of "Belnel Village" in Mattapan, a section of Dorchester, MA. "I grew up there!" I exclaimed. Further conversation revealed that we had grown up on the same street, gone to the same elementary school, and vacationed at the same pond, only ten years apart. We had a good laugh over that.
My two new Carriage Lanterns look great, and now I know that they are properly installed and won't burn my house down. And to top things off, I got to talk about some great memories with somebody who shared many of them.
4. Old Posts: I studying and Praying over Today's Thread, I came across this, which I had written over four years ago. It was about Elijah and Famine, but cited the incident in Today's Reading. Coincidence? I think NOT.
"...Famine is a horrible thing. While most of the time it is related to global weather patterns, it is sometimes the direct result of politics. Stalin's heinous action to starve the Ukraine into submission will forever be known as Holodomor, which means "death by starvation".
The famine in Biafra, a cause celeb of rock musicians, was primarily the result Civil War, although climate was a contributing factor.
And who can forget the Concert for Bangladesh, raising money for the poor unfortunate people caught up in the wake of a "revolution" and subsequent genocide?
In Elijah's time the famine and drought were also the direct result of the sins of man. King Ahab and his "lovely" wife Jezebel were perfectly content to continue in their evil ways despite all of their subjects perishing. Like Stalin, they had no remorse over the tragic suffering of their own people.
Even though Elijah himself had pronounced God's Judgment upon the kingdom, there was no way he could reverse it without God's intervention. He could, however, interact with individuals, one at a time. This story about the Widow of Zarephath (near Sidon in what is now Lebanon) was caught up in the famine even though she wasn't even a Israelite. She was so desperate that she was going to use her last handful of grain to make a little biscuit to be the last meal for herself and her son. And then this Hebrew Prophet shows up and asks her to give even that up! WHAT was he thinking?
Jesus makes a reference to this story in the Book of Luke, Chapter 4:
…24Then He added, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and great famine swept over all the land. 26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to the widow of Zarephath in Sidon.…
Well, that just made the religious leaders FURIOUS! What claim had Gentiles upon the miracles of God? How DARE He bring up that story!
The difference was, of course, that the Widow had Faith which was expressed through obedience to God. She gave all she had to the Man of God, and it didn't run out. But then, she was faced with the death of her only son! It could have destroyed her faith completely when that happened.
Elijah covered the boy three times with his own body (three days in a tomb, perhaps?), all the time praying passionately to The Father for the boy to be brought back.
And so it was. A Gentile received a blessing that was hitherto only available to the Children of Israel..."
And thus we see a series of "coincidences" that tie together injured knees, old neighborhoods, music festivals, home town memories, cottages on a pond, oil paintings, Old Testament Prophets, and Jesus.
By The Way, I've been to Nazareth. It is a really small town. Everybody would have known Jesus there. But, because they were so familiar with Him, they had a hard time thinking of Him as The Messiah. Because of their lack of faith, Jesus did few miracles in His home town. Let us never get so casual and familiar with our relationship with Him that we no longer believe in miracles.
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)
God Bless America.
Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Looking back at my older posting, I realized that the Famine and the Widow and the raising of the woman’s son from the dead were two different incidents. BUT...they were both Gentile women, so the point still stands.

Psalm 29
A Psalm of David.
1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,*
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
worship the Lord in holy splendour.
3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over mighty waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl,*
and strips the forest bare;
and in his temple all say, ‘Glory!’
10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned as king for ever.
11 May the Lord give strength to his people!
May the Lord bless his people with peace!
