Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 5
Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man

5 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[a] 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” 8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”

9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.

11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.

18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[b] how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

The year before I was born, there was a movie made in the UK called The Man In The White Suit. Mom despised Science Fiction movies, but, for some strange reason, this movie resonated with her. When it came on late-night TV, I was encouraged to watch it with her. The protagonist was played by the great British actor Sir Alec Guinness. Who knew that 26 years later, Sir Alec would appear again in another Science Fiction movie, and again in a "white suit" as Obi-Wan-Kenobi in the original STAR WARS.

The plot of "The Man In The White Suit" was echoed in the 1988 Film by Francis Ford Coppola called Tucker: The Man and His Dream The two movies tell the story of Inventors and Entrepreneurs who find themselves being squashed by large organizations who feel threatened by their inventions. In the earlier movie, it was the Fabric Industry and the Trade Unions. In the latter, it was the Automotive Industry.

It may be too early to get the data in, but we are all reeling from a Worldwide Pandemic that has been going on for three years now.In such a situation, every possible therapeutic should have been considered. Instead, only one avenue was "authorized" and all other possibilities were mocked and those who proposed them marginalized. Respected, award-winning medications that had worked safely for years suddenly became unavailable, even for veterinary use. It got to a point where one had to prove one owned a HORSE to get Ivermectin. That particular product had always been my go-to product for Heartworm Prevention in my dogs, and, suddenly, JUST LIKE THAT, I couldn't buy it anymore. I had to go to a different state to get dewormer for my dog, newly rescued, and plagued with intestinal parasites. When I finally got the right stuff (for equine use only), Tippy was healed the same day. Many of you remember what I went through, because I shared my experience online.

Now, suddenly, two years later, august medical publications are publishing glowing accounts of therapeutics they had mocked and banned less than two years ago. They think that the attention span of the average American is so short that nobody will remember. But I remember, and remember WELL. One could almost think that there may have been some collusion going on between the Media, the Government, and Giant Corporations. Ya Think?

Anyway, here we are, looking at Mark Chapter 5 and the story about the Legion of Demons and the Herd of Pigs. What do my stories have to do with that?

As always, Bible Stories should always be looked at in context. The region called "The Gerasenes" was across the Sea of Galilee, towards the East, and inhabited mostly by Gentiles. This is indicated by their keeping of a herd of pigs, which were forbidden to Jews as unclean. It also shows us something else. Since pigs can be raised easily in urban areas as they only need a back yard to root around in, the lifestyle of the people in that area was probably very unappealing to the Jews, whose heritage included the wandering life of a Shepherd. There were cities, of course, but the ideal was the free life of a herdsman. The large herd of pigs in the Gerasenes was indicative of a totally different religion, ethnicity, and lifestyle of the people who lived there. The Jewish People could well have thought these Gentiles to be as unclean as the herd of pigs that they kept. And yet, Jesus went TO them, not the other way around.

Now, imagine the torment suffered by the demoniac. A Roman Legion could have 6000 men. The demons that were tormenting the man (and others, as the Gospel of Matthew indicates) could have been that many or more. These poor souls were ostracized by society, and lived in the caves that were used as tombs. They received no treatment, no comfort, and no help for their agony. Then Jesus comes along, identifies the problem, and heals the man.

The demons from hell don't want to be sent back THERE, so they ask to be sent into the pigs. Then the pigs go nuts and stampede into the sea, and drown. It is not said where the Legion goes after that.

Meanwhile, the healed man is clothed, cleaned up, and comforted by Jesus. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that something AMAZING has just happened. It is obvious that Jesus is much more than an Itinerant Preacher, Teacher, or Prophet. But all the people can see is a lake full of dead pigs.

So what do they do? They beg Jesus to LEAVE.

Jesus has given them a Garment that won't stain, a Vehicle that won't break down, and Deliverance from Evil.

But the pigs represented a large financial loss, and that seems more important.

Dear Lord, Open Our Eyes!
