Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 26

Peter Disowns Jesus

69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.

70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”

73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Oh LORD,

Our God,

How Excellent is Your Holy Name!

You Are The Almighty,

The Rock of Ages,

The Ancient of Days,

The Great I AM,

The King of the Universe,

The Creator, Sustainer, and Destroyer of Worlds!

The Alpha and Omega,

The Beginning and the End

Our Provider,

Our Banner,

Our Healer, Our Righteousness,

Our All Sufficient And Wonderful All In All!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 114

1 When Israel went out from Egypt,
the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,
2 Judah became God’s* sanctuary,
Israel his dominion.

3 The sea looked and fled;
Jordan turned back.
4 The mountains skipped like rams,
the hills like lambs.

5 Why is it, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
6 O mountains, that you skip like rams?
O hills, like lambs?

7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
8 who turns the rock into a pool of water,
the flint into a spring of water.

Some personal stories from real life:

1. The Dorky Kid: Before the days of Computer Science, when being a Nerd was NOT fashionable, it was very hard to fit in if you were Dorky Kid. Dorky Kids were usually high up in the IQ Department, and did well in class, but they also had weird things going on...like being able to sing a Gilbert & Sullivan Operetta from start to finish. Dorky Kids were sometimes held up as examples to the rest of the class for their academic prowess, which, of course caused them to be despised by the rest of the class. Soon, the Dorky Kid was going home from school with a black eye, or stolen lunch money, or a muddy hat that had been thrown into a puddle by a bully. The Dorky Kid had tremendous potential, but it was often tainted by fear, and the Teacher didn't help by calling attention to it.

Longing to "fit in" the Dorky Kid would suppress their knowledge and intellect, and struggle to be able to "sit with the cool kids".

This tactic almost never succeeded, and just caused the Dorky Kid to become more isolated. The irony is that the Dorky Kid could grow up to be a great Inventor, or Entrepreneur, while the "Cool Kids" ended up in mediocre jobs. Kind of like the Leader of The Apostles cowering before a Servant Girl.

2. Your Accent Gives You Away: In churches that follow a Liturgical Calendar, Palm Sunday always has a longer service than any other time of the year. This is because the Entire Passion of St. Matthew is read aloud, and takes a long, long time. Johann Sebastian Bach set the whole thing to music, using various soloists, chorus, and existing hymns, to produce "The Passion of St. Matthew" which is an awesome piece of music, but is even longer than just reading the Gospel straight through. It doesn't help that in some denominations, the congregation stands for the entire reading.

My parents' church tried something akin to Bach's treatment of "The Passion". They acted it out, using various people in the choir to be the characters. Peter was played by a nice young Irishman with a Brogue you could cut with a knife. Every time the man said "I DON'T KNOW THE MAN!" it was so thick with the Irish pronunciation that it was nearly unintelligible. Finally, the woman who played the Servant Girl read her part.

“Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

The congregation, mostly Irish themselves, burst into laughter. It was a strange moment, to say the least.

3. Have Mercy On Me: As I have said before, I listened to St. Matthew's Passion for decades without understanding it, because it was in German. There was a lovely melody in the middle sung by a woman (I thought!) along with a magnificent violin solo. I liked it, but didn't really know what [she] was singing about. Then along came the Internet. I was able to listen and follow along with a German/English translation on two adjacent tabs. The song was supposed to be PETER! And it wasn't being sung by a woman, but by a male alto. It was totally weird. What was going on here?

Further study showed that this Aria was based upon the single line in St. Matthew's Gospel: "Peter wept bitterly." The lyrics are a plea for mercy, and express profound regret, repentance, and sorrow. The "girly" voice that Bach chose for the Aria could have been symbolic of Peter feeling that he had been stripped of his Manliness, and that he cowered before a Servant Girl to save his own skin. Meanwhile, the Apostle John showed no such fear, and even followed after Jesus to stand at the foot of the Cross, comforting Mary and the other Women who had also braved the crowd's disapproval.

Since only males sang in the Choir back in Bach's day, the song was sung by a Male Alto or "Contra-tenor". Now, however, a female Contralto usually sings the part. Here is Marian Anderson singing it on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial:

Erbarme Dich.

Let us never compromise ourselves to sit at the "Cool Kid's Table". It's not worth it.

Not only is she doing a great job of singing it, but she is conducting the orchestra at the same time.

WOW! Beautiful interpretation. I had not heard this. Another I like is by the counter-tenor Andreas Scholl.

Beautiful! Sounds so authentically Baroque, no vibrato and comletely heartfelt.
