Hospital ‘does not advocate for termination, that is just the lived experience’, says Prof Fergal Malone
About 95 per cent of parents whose babies are diagnosed with Down syndrome at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin choose to have an abortion, according to the master of the hospital.
Prof Fergal Malone says the Rotunda strives to be non-directive in its counselling to affected parents. “The 95 per cent who choose to travel do reach that decision themselves. We very much do not advocate for termination,” he said. “The reality is that the vast majority choose to terminate. I don’t have a view on whether that is the right thing. We don’t advocate for it, that is just the lived experience.”
Although the risk of Down syndrome can be identified as early as nine weeks into pregnancy, confirmation of the diagnosis usually takes about 12 weeks, which is the cut-off for most terminations under Irish legislation introduced in 2019.

It’s how Iceland “eliminated” Downs.
I rarely see anyone in my daily life with Downs. Not the case decades ago.
How sad
Infuriating. Long ago, I worked at a foundation that helped kids with Downs. Syndrome, AKA retarded kids. . I didn’t actually work with the kids, did PR and helped raise money for them. I love those little kids, most of whom are just as sweet as they come. I give money to “Special Olympics” every year.
Prayers.
even the article points out that those going there are usually the ones who would abort an imperfect kid.
So it’s a biased sample.
However, after reading reports of the collapse of belief in God in Ireland, I do suspect that the percentage of abortion of Down’s syndrome is high.
I have a cousin with Downs that is the sweetest, most loving person you could ever know. Very shrewd with people and smart too. She lives on her own, works and is dating. Why in the heck would someone want to kill a baby that could very well grow up to be like her? Very evil.
What’s the percentage in the USA?
