Hebrew-language media reported Thursday that Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu has walked back a recent promise he had made not to alter the Law of Return, as part of a coalition agreement with the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism and Shas parties.
The proposition to change the law has roiled Israeli politicians, including those within Netanyahu’s Likud party.
Prominent Netanyahu ally Yuli Edelstein spoke out against any proposed changes, saying that adjusting the law was a slippery slope that could lead to the policy’s demise.
On the other hand, former Religious Services Minister Matan Kahana of the National Unity party, who clashed heavily with ultra-Orthodox politicians during his time in office, said changes to the law are necessary.

I know an elderly lady married to a Christian minister who wears a Magen David gold necklace and considered herself a member of the tribe of Israel.
Spiritually we are part of Israel. Genetically, not so much. Unless you’re a Messianic Jew.

They want to limit it to actual Jews:
Israeli politicians have focused on the “grandfather clause” within the Law of Return, which recognizes third-generation Jewish roots as sufficient for Israeli citizenship. This means that a person who has one Jewish grandparent, but who is not considered Jewish under Jewish law, can immigrate to Israel and claim citizenship. The clause also states that the spouse of this person is entitled to citizenship and residency as well.
The ultra-Orthodox parties have proposed that the grandfather clause be scrapped, which would mean that only those with Jewish mothers and fathers qualify for the streamlined path for Israeli citizenship.
Messyonics are nearly never Jews. They are not to be counted as such.
According to Jewish law, one is a Jew if one's mother is Jewish. If one's maternal grandmother is Jewish, then one's mother is Jewish and therefore you are Jewish. Being Jewish is NOT passed on by a paternal grandfather.
On that we’re gonna have to agree to disagree.

Under the Reich what she is doing would have been evidence enough to kill her. It's more than enough evidence for the "Palestinians" [sic] to kill her! But as for her "Right of Return"? That would be pushing her luck …
God seemed to think that if people were willing to abide in the ways HE set forth, then they should be included among his people since a mixed multitude came out of Egypt with the children of God.
And, those who have accepted Yeshuah as messiah and are willing to abide in God’s ways, are to be considered adopted into the family.
Messy or not, few actually accept God’s wishes and ways. Most cling to man’s ways all the while strongly rationalizing why things should be according to man.
The reason for the “Jewish grandfather” rule was that it mirrored the Nazi definition of being Jewish. Israel after WWII didn’t want to throw up any roadblocks to Jewish citizenship. They wanted anyone who could be persecuted for being a Jew to be able to emigrate to Israel.
Times have changed. There have been incidents of “Russian Jews” emigrating to Israel and turning out to be neo-nazis. That is one of the main drivers for reforming the right to return.
I have a relative who is a Messianic Jew. She was born Jewish, of a Jewish mother and father, grew up Jewish, and as an adult decided that Jesus was the Messiah.
Are you saying that, by that decision, she is no longer Jewish? Meanwhile, atheists of Jewish descent seem to have no issues being regarded as Jews. What about a Jew who embraces Buddhism?
“There have been incidents of “Russian Jews” emigrating to Israel and turning out to be neo-nazis. ”
Do you mean classical “exterminate Jews” Nazis, or just “firmly against socialism and the Left’s agenda” Nazi?

…Anti-Semitism also is surfacing in other Israeli venues: Arbat, a bookstore with branches across Israel, sells books imported from Moscow with titles such as “The Holocaust Myth” and “Jewish Fascism in Russia.”…
