Matthew 18

Causing to Stumble

6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. 7 Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come! 8 If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

I went SCUBA Diving a few times., but stopped doing it because it hurt my ears. In one of my few SCUBA adventures, my husband and I renewed our wedding vows 35 feet underwater in Kauai. It was on our 20th Anniversary, and it was a very cool thing to do.

Now I mentioned that SCUBA Diving hurt my ears. This is because of the the tremendous pressure the ocean exerts upon one's body In fact, divers know that they have to equalize the pressure every three feet when they first enter the water. Then, on the way back up, they need to ascend very slowly so the body can readjust to the decreased pressure at Sea Level. Your body wants to go up as fast as possible, but your mind has to keep your body under control, so that you won't get "The Bends". But, no matter how hard I tried to follow the rules, it still made my ears hurt.

Oh...and especially DON'T go SCUBA Diving the day before your flight home. Your ears will NEVER forgive you for that!

You would think that all that pressure would keep you down, but your body, strapped with a tank of compressed air, is very buoyant. In other words, your body wants to float, while your brain wants to get down to the reef and do some exploring. A belt of LEAD WEIGHTS solves that problem, with just enough weight to achieve "neutral buoyancy". That means that you can swim freely up or down. You won't sink like a stone or shoot to the surface. It's up to you. But, be sure you only wear enough weight for you, and not too much. That will make your ascent more difficult.

It's a wonderful experience, but since I've already crossed it off my Bucket List, I won't be doing it again.

Jesus uses the picture of a Millstone to describe the punishment for those who harm children. Millstones are huge, and extremely heavy. This is a requirement because the husks of grain are very strong, protecting the nutritious kernels inside. It's very hard to grind with a Millstone, and so humans have devised all kinds of ways to accomplish this task. From Human to Animal Power, Windmills and Water Wheels, and finally, Electricity, the grinding of Grain has been going on for Millennia. No matter what the power source, there is always a Millstone. Everybody could visualize the analogy when Jesus spoke of it. It must have sent a sincere shudder through the disciples to hear Jesus speak of having a Millstone strapped around one's neck and then being thrown into the Sea.

We tend to think that our current Civilization is very kind and tender towards children. We point back at the Ancient Romans, whose Pater could expose unwanted children on the hillside. We recoil in horror at the cultures that sell their children into slavery, and chastise Africa and the Middle East for their "Child Soldiers" in their endless wars. But our civilization is not so great either. Even though Roe v Wade has been repealed (Thank God!) there are still thousands of abortions every day in America. Child Sex Trafficking goes on, as does horrible pornography on the Internet. Every day there are new revelations of abuse that take place in our most "trusted" institutions. There may not be enough Millstones to go around, and we're going to need a bigger Ocean.

Just when we think our Era is the most Enlightened in the History of the World, we see that we are still the depraved sinners of Bronze Age.

And, just when we think that we are the first society that has cared about Children, we are confronted with these 2000-year-old Words of Jesus.

There is Man's Way of doing things, and there's God's Way May Our Beloved Nation make the right choice.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
