Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 17
Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time
22 When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. 23 They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.” And the disciples were filled with grief.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Almighty and Eternal God,
How Excellent is Your Name Over All The Earth!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise,
For Your Alone Are Holy,
You Alone Are God,
You Alone Are The Most High!
Omnipotent,
Omniscient,
and Omnipresent,
You See The End From The Beginning
And The Beginning From The End.
We Thank You For Your Precious and Holy Word,
Which Gives Us Daily
Insight
Into Your Eternal Mind,
Your Righteousness,
and Your Love For Us.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

In my Freshman year of High School, we were given a list of books to read during the Summer in preparation for the Tenth Grade. Since I was already reading at a College Level, and going through a melancholy period (quite fashionable at the time...it's now called "Emo"), I tossed the entire list as "lame". I had to read 12 books though, as I would be quizzed upon them. So I read everything I could find by Dostoevsky, added a couple of Tolstoys, a few other books ("And Quiet Flows the Don" and "The Bridge on the Drina"), in order to suitably impress my teachers that I did NOT slack off during the Summer.
Although I was reading at an adult level, I was still a schoolgirl emotionally, and found myself getting crushes on 19th Century Fictional Characters. Prince Mishkin, Rodian Romanovich, Count Vronsky, and a lot of others, populated my dreams. None of them, however, could hold a candle to Alyosha, the youngest of the four Karamazov Brothers.
Raised in a totally dysfunctional family, Alyosha became very religious, and joined a monastery. Even though he still had ties to his family, he worshiped the Abbot of the monastery. The Abbot had a reputation as a very holy man, and people had already pegged him as a "Saint" with a capital "S". The truth was that the Abbot was really just a human being like everyone else.
The Abbot was elderly, and soon got sick and died. At first, Alyosha couldn't even accept that the man was dead. Then he figured that, since the Abbot was a "Saint" with a capital "S", he would not see corruption. That is, the Abbot's body would not decompose like that of an ordinary man. The whole monastery believed this, so they didn't bury the body, or do anything to preserve it, but left it on display for people to come and pay homage to the great man.
Well, the inevitable happened, and the body began to decay. Whether it was the climate or the chemical make-up of the Abbot's body, for some reason it decayed in a particularly nasty manner and smelled so bad that great shame and reproach came to the whole community. It hurt the reputation of the monastery, and caused a great deal of mean-spirited hilarity amongst Alyosha's more worldly older brothers. I have not read the book in over 55 years, but I can still feel the effect of Alyosha's personal grief, embarrassment, and crisis of faith.
The message was, of course, that we do not put our faith in a man, but in God alone.
Jesus's disciples had been with him for a while now. They had left their livelihoods behind to follow Him. Now He was talking about DYING. How were they supposed to handle this? Of course, He was also talking about "rising again", but the belief at the time was that EVERYBODY would rise again eventually, on the "Last Day" (see Martha's remark in John 11).
These were practical, hard-working men who had made their living from the sea. Death was a constant companion, and they knew what happens when a person dies. Were they getting "set-up" for a crisis like our little friend Alyosha?
We all know in retrospect that the Disciples didn't quite get it at first. One betrayed Jesus, one denied Him three times, and all but John FLED the day of the Crucifixion. The Resurrection came as a surprise, even though Jesus had told them in advance that it would happen. It's easy to say that we would have behaved differently under the circumstances, but would we?
I guess the moral of this story is to not let disappointment destroy our faith, and also to be very careful about whom we place our faith in. Only the One True God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) deserves it.
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

Psalm 6
To the leader: with stringed instruments; according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.
1 O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger,
or discipline me in your wrath.
2 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing;
O Lord, heal me, for my bones are shaking with terror.
3 My soul also is struck with terror,
while you, O Lord—how long?
4 Turn, O Lord, save my life;
deliver me for the sake of your steadfast love.
5 For in death there is no remembrance of you;
in Sheol who can give you praise?
6 I am weary with my moaning;
every night I flood my bed with tears;
I drench my couch with my weeping.
7 My eyes waste away because of grief;
they grow weak because of all my foes.
8 Depart from me, all you workers of evil,
for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.
9 The Lord has heard my supplication;
the Lord accepts my prayer.
10 All my enemies shall be ashamed and struck with terror;
they shall turn back, and in a moment be put to shame.

As a matter of fact, I print out the stories every day and now i have a bookcase GROANING with binders. I do look back at them from time to time, mostly so that I don’t repeat myself...too much. LOL. :-)
