Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 15

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”

23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”

24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”

25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.

26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,

Our God,

How Excellent Is Your Name Over All The Earth!

How Mighty,

How Majestic,

and How Wonderful!

You Alone Are Worthy of Praise and Worship,

For You Alone Are the Most High,

Ancient of Days,

Our Rock and Our Redeemer,

Our Refuge and Our Strength!

You Are the Creator of All Things,

And Yet, Even In Your Omnipotence,

You Give us the Privilege of Calling Out To You,

"Abba, Father!"

Help us to live exemplary lives,

That we will never be a reproach to the enemies of our souls.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Rivka had been a brilliant scientist in Stalin's USSR. However, in 1984, she was in a Jewish Nursing Home in Massachusetts, where I was the Activities Director. Nobody knew much about Rivka because she seemed incapable of communicating. Day after day, she sat in her chair and stared into space, saying nothing.

It was my responsibility to record Rivka's "progress" on her medical chart. Every week at the multidisciplinary meeting I would write in little tiny letters on the chart:

SPOKE TO RIVKA IN RUSSIAN-NO RESPONSE
SANG TO RIVKA IN ENGLISH-NO RESPONSE
SANG TO RIVKA IN YIDDISH-NO RESPONSE
SANG TO RIVKA IN RUSSIAN-NO RESPONSE

One day, I brought my big, goofy Samoyed dog, named Preston, to work with me. Preston was not too bright but he was gorgeous. My dear High School Friend, who trains dogs, once told me this adage about sled dogs:

"Malamutes are bred for strength.
Siberian Huskies are bred for speed.
Samoyeds are bred to look marvelous."

And so it was with Preston, He was beautiful, but was a dumb as a drawer full of rocks. He was extremely soft and fluffy, and most of the patients liked him. I took a chance and brought him over to Rivka, who was, as usual, sitting in her chair staring into space. I put her hands onto his luxuriant fur. Without changing her expression, Rivka said:

белая собачка (byelaya sabachka), which means "dear little white dog".

She was not just saying "White Dog", or even "Little white dog", because she had put a special ending onto the word "dog" that turned Preston into a "dear little dog".

I tried to explain this to the nurse at the next meeting, but it wasn't possible to convey that exceptional moment I had with Rivka.

Today's Gospel story has puzzled people for centuries. Why would Jesus call this poor Canaanite woman a DOG? Even today in the Middle East, dogs are considered unclean, and "dog" was an epithet for Gentiles. Was Jesus being mean and racist for saying "It's not fit that the children's bread be tossed to the dogs"?

Well, first of all, we need to remember that Jesus was omniscient and knew exactly how the woman would respond. Her great faith and persistence would be recorded in the Gospels to inspire us all. But, just this morning, I discovered something while preparing this Thread. The Greek word that appears in Matthew for "dog" has an endearing ending on it. Much like Rivka's word for "dog" the word that the Evangelist chose for this conversation meant "dear little dog". That would indicate that Jesus was not referring to the unclean, wild, scavengers that roamed the wilderness, but that of a pup or even a house pet. The Canaanite Woman responds in kind when she compares herself to the puppies that wait at the children's table for a little crumb to fall.

In Arabic, the word for dog is kalb. It is a big insult, and there is no mistake about its meaning.

In Hebrew, the word for dog is the root of a very noble name, symbolizing strength, persistence, and faithfulness. That name is Caleb, and was the name of Joshua's right-hand-man.

Psalm 5

To the leader: for the flutes. A Psalm of David.

1 Give ear to my words, O Lord;
give heed to my sighing.
2 Listen to the sound of my cry,
my King and my God,
for to you I pray.
3 O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
in the morning I plead my case to you, and watch.

4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
evil will not sojourn with you.
5 The boastful will not stand before your eyes;
you hate all evildoers.
6 You destroy those who speak lies;
the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful.

7 But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
will enter your house,
I will bow down towards your holy temple
in awe of you.
8 Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
because of my enemies;
make your way straight before me.

9 For there is no truth in their mouths;
their hearts are destruction;
their throats are open graves;
they flatter with their tongues.
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of their many transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
so that those who love your name may exult in you.
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
you cover them with favour as with a shield.

Interesting lesson about dogs—as you are most attached to these fur babies.

It’s hard to live up to the love of a dog.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.
