Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 15

That Which Defiles

15 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”

3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[a] and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[b] 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

8  “‘These people honor me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me.

9  They worship me in vain;
    their teachings are merely human rules.’[c]”

10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”

12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”

13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides.[d] If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”

16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

Having bought and sold two homes in 25 years, I figured that "Passing Papers" on our new home in Florida would have been easy. All you have to do is sit at a table with the buyer, seller, and a bank lawyer, pass papers around, and sign them. Without any complications, such as tax liens or unclear title, this should only take about 45 minutes. Then you get the key, and move in. I have even passed papers while the moving van sat outside the door of my new home. But that was in Boston. THIS was in Florida. The closing on my house in Florida took over FOUR HOURS.

There were forms and affidavits that I had never seen in my life, and, frankly, they were a little insulting. They all seemed to be devised to prevent a couple's children from taking over their parents' home in Florida. They seemed to assume that the parents were "straw buyers", using their mature credit to buy the house, and then sign it over to their children so that, when it became time to collect any kind of benefits, they could declare that they had no assets. At least, that what these forms and affidavits seemed to imply. There was also the possibility that these sign and sworn papers were there to protect the parents from their children taking the home away from them.

I was appalled. I asked the Bank Lawyer if my suspicions were correct.

"It's that, and worse," he replied. "You wouldn't believe the stuff that goes on!"

I was horrified. How could anyone do something like that to their parents? As I have grown older, I have seen that this type of thing goes on all the time, and not just in Florida.

Evidently, something similar was going on in Jesus's time. While the Pharisees had a regulation for everything, they were neglecting one of the Ten Commandments, whic was to take care of their parents. To make matters even worse, they were self-righteously claiming that the money they would have used to take care of their parents was going to God instead. Not only was this disobedient to the Commandment, but it was enlisting God as an accomplice. We now call this type of behavior "Virtue Signaling". Jesus must have known that the particular Pharisees who were criticizing the disciples for not adhering to a hand-washing ritual (which had nothing to do with germs), were also engaging in the aforementioned behavior with their parents.

When we see religious leaders engaging in sin, it hits a nerve. These are the people who are supposed to be nurturing the flock, teaching, feeding, comforting, and supporting. "Correcting" is also a duty of those in authority, but it rings hollow if the Authority Figure is committing a far more evil sin than the little ones he is correcting in others. May the Lord forgive us for self-righteousness, hypocrisy, and gossip.

First and foremost, O Almighty God, we kneel before You, and with hands lifted we proclaim: Holy, Holy, Holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory. We then turn in repentance and ask for MERCY upon ourselves for the times we have cursed our neighbors, said hateful things in gossip, ridiculed and mocked others with pride and unforgiveness, in anger and bitterness, frustration or fear whatever, we literally filled the heavens with unclean words, perverted jesting, the list goes on. LORD, clean our mouths with HOLY FIRE that we may worship YOU in the Spirit of Holiness. Thank You.
