Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 14
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father In Heaven,
Holy and Sanctified is Your Most Wonderful Name!
You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The Most High!
You Alone Are The One True God Of Abraham,
You Are The Ancient Of Days,
LORD of Hosts,
and Rock of All Ages,
Our Creator,
You Have Made Us,
and All That Is.
You Are The Same Yesterday,
Today, and Forever.
Your Loving Kindness Is from Everlasting To Everlasting.
Even When We Are Unfaithful,
You Are Always Faithful.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Psalm 43
1 Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause
against an ungodly people;
from those who are deceitful and unjust
deliver me!
2 For you are the God in whom I take refuge;
why have you cast me off?
Why must I walk about mournfully
because of the oppression of the enemy?
3 O send out your light and your truth;
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
and to your dwelling.
4 Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God my exceeding joy;
and I will praise you with the harp,
O God, my God.
5 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my help and my God.

I always thought that you could seat more people in the TD Boston Garden (Home of the Celtics and the Bruins) than the Antique Fenway Park, which is crowded in between city buildings, but I was wrong. Fenway Park, with some new expansions, can seat over 37,000 people, and the maximum capacity of TD Garden is under 20,000. I thought that Fenway could only seat 33,000, and used that as a measure for estimating crowds. When I saw Eric Clapton in September at the TD Garden, the seats behind the stage were blocked off, so the crowd probably didn't exceed 15,000. Still, it's a LOT of people, and getting out of the venue was a nightmare. Luckily, the crowd was made up of mostly Middle-Aged and Senior Music Fans, so it was pretty much an orderly exodus.
Last night, and tonight, Van Morrison is appearing at the Schubert Theater in Boston. Although I love Van Morrison, and have never seen him in concert, I could not afford the tickets.
Van is known to have incredible stage fright and does his best live concerts in very small venues. The Schubert is perfect for him, as it only has 1500 seats. Talk about an intimate setting! That may be why the tickets were so ridiculously expensive. The smaller, intimate crowd of die-hard fans have to make up the difference with their ticket prices. (These were not resales, they were original prices). Anyway, they don't even give you a paper ticket anymore. It's coded into your smart phone. That means that Old Neanderthals like me (flip phone user) have to rely on another member of my party to keep my ticket on her phone so it can be scanned at the gate. Some people, like me, like to save the ticket stubs as a souvenir of the occasion, but that is no longer an option. Anyway...on to our Gospel Story for Today.
Having played for a crowd of 5000 people, I can easily imagine the size of the crowd sitting by the Sea of Galilee that day. In 1984, I sat on the banks of Galilee on a large, sloping area that were like the sides of a shallow bowl with the Sea in the middle. Several busloads of tourists sat down with us, and we barely filled a tiny portion of the area. There was room for a lot more people. Avi, our guide, went down to the shore of the Sea and faced us. In moderate tones, he explained that this area was like a natural amphitheater, and that the surface of Galilee acted like a huge diaphragm that amplified his voice. He was correct, as everybody heard every word he spoke. It made the story of The Loaves and Fishes come alive. While we do not need "proof" to have faith (with proof, faith becomes knowledge, and isn't "faith" by definition anymore), it's always lovely when the natural surroundings, an archaeological find, or some ancient document, tell us that we were right to believe all along.
And so, the 5000 people, sitting on the banks, hearing Jesus speak without a microphone and getting every word, and all of it happening in an orderly fashion, is no longer a matter of faith, but of observation and logic. However, FEEDING all those people is another matter entirely.
Modern Critical Scholars have tried in vain to explain this away, but they can't. This is one Miracle that is included in all Four Gospels. Evidently, God considers it important. While the setting which was like an amphitheater, the amplification of the voice due to the water and the shape of the land, the number of the Multitude are all quite plausible, there is NO explanation for the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes other than a True Miracle.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM! And for the Preservation of the Valiant Israeli Nation!

"The Miracle Of The Loaves And Fishes" Tintoretto |
|
| | HEN Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
And Jesus went forth, and saw a great mul- titude, and was moved with compassion | toward them, and he healed their sick. And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
He said, Bring them hither to me.
And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children."
