Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 13

The Parable of the Sower

13 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”

11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables:

“Though seeing, they do not see;
    though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:

“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
    you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15  For this people’s heart has become calloused;
    they hardly hear with their ears,
    and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
    hear with their ears,
    understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[a]

16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

Amen !!! <><

From my prayer time concerning our country!

Ezekiel 12

12The word of the Lord came to me: 2Mortal, you are living in the midst of a rebellious house, who have eyes to see but do not see, who have ears to hear but do not hear; 3for they are a rebellious house. Therefore, mortal, prepare for yourself an exile’s baggage, and go into exile by day in their sight; you shall go like an exile from your place to another place in their sight. Perhaps they will understand, though they are a rebellious house. 4You shall bring out your baggage by day in their sight, as baggage for exile; and you shall go out yourself at evening in their sight, as those do who go into exile. 5Dig through the wall in their sight, and carry the baggage through it. 6In their sight you shall lift the baggage on your shoulder, and carry it out in the dark; you shall cover your face, so that you may not see the land; for I have made you a sign for the house of Israel.

7 I did just as I was commanded. I brought out my baggage by day, as baggage for exile, and in the evening I dug through the wall with my own hands; I brought it out in the dark, carrying it on my shoulder in their sight.

8 In the morning the word of the Lord came to me: 9Mortal, has not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said to you, ‘What are you doing?’ 10Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: This oracle concerns the prince in Jerusalem and all the house of Israel in it.’ 11Say, ‘I am a sign for you: as I have done, so shall it be done to them; they shall go into exile, into captivity.’ 12And the prince who is among them shall lift his baggage on his shoulder in the dark, and shall go out; he* shall dig through the wall and carry it through; he shall cover his face, so that he may not see the land with his eyes. 13I will spread my net over him, and he shall be caught in my snare; and I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, yet he shall not see it; and he shall die there. 14I will scatter to every wind all who are around him, his helpers and all his troops; and I will unsheathe the sword behind them. 15And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them through the countries. 16But I will let a few of them escape from the sword, from famine and pestilence, so that they may tell of all their abominations among the nations where they go; then they shall know that I am the Lord.

17 The word of the Lord came to me: 18Mortal, eat your bread with quaking, and drink your water with trembling and with fearfulness; 19and say to the people of the land, Thus says the Lord God concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the land of Israel: They shall eat their bread with fearfulness, and drink their water in dismay, because their land shall be stripped of all it contains, on account of the violence of all those who live in it. 20The inhabited cities shall be laid waste, and the land shall become a desolation; and you shall know that I am the Lord.

21 The word of the Lord came to me: 22Mortal, what is this proverb of yours about the land of Israel, which says, ‘The days are prolonged, and every vision comes to nothing’? 23Tell them therefore, ‘Thus says the Lord God: I will put an end to this proverb, and they shall use it no more as a proverb in Israel.’ But say to them, The days are near, and the fulfilment of every vision. 24For there shall no longer be any false vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel. 25But I the Lord will speak the word that I speak, and it will be fulfilled. It will no longer be delayed; but in your days, O rebellious house, I will speak the word and fulfil it, says the Lord God.

26 The word of the Lord came to me: 27Mortal, the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees is for many years ahead; he prophesies for distant times.’ 28Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord God: None of my words will be delayed any longer, but the word that I speak will be fulfilled, says the Lord God.

Anyone who has seen the movie "Glory" knows a little about the Massachusetts 54th and 55th Regiment in the American Civil War. The training camp for these Historic Regiments was Camp Meigs, and it was located in Readville, MA, which is within the greater Boston City Limits, right on the Milton Border near the Blue Hills. There was nothing to mark the place where the camp had stood (I think that has been corrected by now), and the area had returned to a wild state, with wetlands, fields, and woods. My 6th-Grade Friend lived near there, and informed me that, about three miles into the woods was an ancient ruined farm, and pumpkins came back every year. It was a Secret Pumpkin Patch that dated back over a hundred years, and the pumpkins were free for the taking. Halloween was coming, so we decided to trek into the woods and get some pumpkins.

Anyone who has ever been to a Military Camp knows that they cover a huge area, and Camp Meigs was no exception. It was a long trek through the woods, but it was a nice warm day, so we didn't mind. We entered the clearing, and there it was...The Secret Pumpkin Patch. With glee we rushed into the field and gathered all the little pumpkins we could find and put them in shopping bags...then, we each chose a perfect round ten-pounder for ourselves, and began the hike homeward. It was now about noontime. Like in the Bogart movie The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", the day grew hotter and the pumpkins got heavier. Soon our exhaustion overcame our greed, and the trail became littered with all the little pumpkins, all the way home. I managed to hang onto the ten-pounder, and it was made into a perfect jack-o-lantern. But all the lovely little pumpkins, so cute and finely shaped, were left for the birds.

I love perennials. Put a bunch of bulbs in the ground and wait till Spring, and you have daffodils and tulips year after year forever. Unless you have squirrels. They dig the bulbs up and eat them. I had a whole patch of magnificent gladioli one year, and the next year the patch was full of holes where the bulbs had been. I don't like squirrels. I call them "fuzzy-tailed-tree-rats". Maybe tulip and daffodil bulbs don't taste as good as gladioli, because they seem to survive. I planted about twenty daffodil bulbs last month, so maybe I'll have some nice flowers in Spring after all.

The Parable of the Sower is one of my favorite parables of Jesus. Anyone who has ever stuck a bulb in the ground or who has tried to grow their own food can identify with the story. But, just in case it needs explanation, Jesus provides it. His aim was not to be some obscure, inscrutable, esoteric religious leader, but to REACH people with His Message.

Back in the 60's, we seemed attracted to stuff that was "deep" and inscrutable. Hours were spent interpreting the real meaning of a Beatles Song, and for years there was a website called "The Annotated Grateful Dead" which cited the literary allusions and possible interpretations of their songs. It seemed that we wanted to be puzzled by these songs. If we couldn't figure them out, then that seemed to make them really profound.

Just last week, I found a 65-year old record in the $1.00 bin. It was "Buddy Holly's Greatest Hits". I cleaned the vinyl as best I could, and let the needle down. Here is what I heard:

"The Sun is up
The Sky is Blue
It's Beautiful,
And so are you."

I was SHOCKED. The Beatles had lifted the entire thing from Buddy Holly in the song "Dear Prudence" on the White Album! How could they do such a thing? Lennon and McCartney were so talented at songwriting that they didn't have to steal anything from anybody. And yet, there it was.

Could it be, that as the 60's grew weirder, darker, and more arcane spiritually, everybody was now longing for the simpler, more innocent love songs of Buddy Holly?

Jesus, speaking in Parables, was speaking to everybody, not just scholars and deep thinkers. He was, in fact, sowing the seeds in all directions, and their landing spot would determine whether or not they would grow and bear fruit. Like a Pumpkin Patch that has been producing pumpkins since the Civil War, the Word will flourish if it lands in good soil.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
