Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 12

The Sign of Jonah

38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”

39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”

Most of you already know the Title of My Favorite Book.(The Holy Bible!) My Second Favorite Book (Moby Dick) has a lot of references to My First, most notably the Book of Jonah. While Moby Dick did not exist in the time of Jesus, The Book of Jonah most certainly DID. And, while Moby Dick was Fiction (although inspired by the disaster of the Whaler Essex), Jesus viewed the Book of Jonah as a True Account. His listeners did too, and so, when Jesus spoke of "the Sign of the Prophet Jonah" they knew exactly what He was talking about.

Jonah was as good as dead in the belly of the Great Fish. He may have actually been dead, or perhaps, like Daniel in the Lions' Den, he was shielded from the fish's digestive juices and kept alive in that dark place. His prayer was certainly desperate, and speaks of himself being strangled by seaweed and dragged into the pit of hell. Here it is, in its entirety:

“In my distress I called to the Lord,
and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,
and you listened to my cry.
3 You hurled me into the depths,
into the very heart of the seas,
and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers
swept over me. 4 I said, ‘I have been banished
from your sight;
yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’
5 The engulfing waters threatened me,
the deep surrounded me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.
6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you, Lord my God,
brought my life up from the pit.
7 “When my life was ebbing away,
I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
to your holy temple.
8 “Those who cling to worthless idols
turn away from God's love for them.
9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’” (Jonah 2)

When Jonah prayed that "Salvation comes from the Lord", the Great Fish vomited him up on dry land. It was as if he had been raised from the dead. H went on to preach to the citizens of Nineveh, and was successful in getting them to repent. Jonah did not emerge from the Fish as a perfect human being. He still suffered from bouts of depression, and petulance, and had to be corrected by God a few times when things didn't go his way. Nevertheless, he had "died" and was resurrected to new life, upon his declaration that "God is Salvation", or, in Hebrew, "Yeshua".

Just as Jesus referred to Jonah, Jonah inadvertently referred to Jesus. And, just as Jonah had been "dead" for three days and then raised to New Life, so was Jesus Three Days in the Tomb, and Rose Again.

By the way, "The Sign of Jonah" has become a sign that finds itself on the bumpers of many a vehicle driven by a Christian. It looks like This:



The Greek Letters stand for, "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior". It also spells out the word "Ichthys", the Greek word for FISH.

Who says God doesn't have a sense of humor?

It seems the purpose of Jonah was to preach the resurrection.

I understand the original Pinocchio story had images of Jonah in the whale. The puppet “died” and came back to life as a boy.

When I was a little girl, Pinocchio was my favorite Disney movie. All the other kids preferred Cinderella, and thought that Pinocchio was weird. there were no princesses in it!

The whole movie had allegories of sin and redemption, especially when Pinocchio strayed to "Pleasure Island".
