The Wise and Foolish Builders

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

After my Mom passed away in 2015, my siblings and I had to sell her home and split the proceeds. Then, my sister, her husband, two sons, twin baby grandsons, and I all had to find places to live. I had a yen to return to Florida, as I HATE SHOVELLING SNOW, and so I got onto the Internet to find either an apartment or mobile home that would accept me, my dog (Lynn-DAH), and my Harley. I liked the Gulf Coast better than the Miami/Ft.Lauderdale area, because, even though the climate was the same, the "vibe' was different. Ft. Meyers and Sanibel Island were so much more laid-back and suitable to my lifestyle. I aimed for an Over-55 Community, as I was well into my 60's at the time. Armed with several phone numbers, I settled in to explore the possibilites of moving back to "Paradise".

Call after call disappointed me. Some didn't want dogs over 20 pounds, and some didn't want motorcycles. Most wanted a Credit Score of over 700. Some required a huge "Buy-In" to the HOA. l spent days on the phone, trying to convince people that I was "worthy" of living in their community, and having no luck at all.

Suddenly, it dawned on me that my sister was going to need me very soon, as her husband was in rapidly declining health. She was given an opportunity to purchase a Mobile Home in S.E. Massachusetts, but it needed work. So I stayed on, living in a corner of Mom's house until it was sold, going every day to Sis's place to paint, lay flooring, and scrub away the remnants of a very sloppy preveious occupant.

Lynn-DAH required frequent walks, as she was getting older, and I discovered a mobile home being renovated right around the corner. I went in, made an offer, and bought it.

The renovation was haphazard and amateurish, so I have had a lot of work to do to bring my trailer up to code, but it's my HOME now. And time has shown that my sister really DOES need me, and I made the right decision seven years ago.

One of the Mobile Home Communities that had rejected me for my 50-Pound-Dog and my Harley, was in Ft. Meyers. I looked in horror at the footage after Hurricane Ian. All the Mobile Homes in the park had been lifted off their foundations, blown down the street, tumbled around, and piled up on top of each other in the canal. Thank God, the Senior Citizens in the Community had all been evacuated! There was one lady in tears being interviewed, saying, "Thank God, we were all evacuated, but we've lost EVERYTHING." I got a lump in my throat watching her. That could have been ME. My heart went out to her and her neighbors.

Even in Massachusetts, we sometimes see storms that wash houses away into the sea. But we also have a very rocky coastline, with rocky cliffs overlooking the surf. That's where the oldest mansions are located, some dating back to Colonial Days. Sea Captains, Shipbuilders, and Merchants took the high rocky ground for their mansions, and they are still there after surviving over 200 New England Winters.

Jesus's Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders rings true to this day.
