Cdl. Thomas Collins Takes Part in Pagan ‘Smudging’ Ritual in Toronto Cathedral

The Archbishop of Toronto, Cardinal Thomas Collins, participated in the pagan purification ritual of 'smudging,' as Pope Francis had done during his visit to Canada earlier this year.

TORONTO (LifeSiteNews) — The Archbishop of Toronto organized and participated in an indigenous pagan ritual of purification, known as a “smudging” ceremony, in Toronto’s Cathedral of St. Michael on September 30.

The smudging ritual took place directly in front of the main altar just before the beginning of Mass, which was presided over by Cardinal Thomas Collins. Both the ritual and the Mass were intended to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

In the video of the ceremony at the Toronto cathedral, Collins can be seen wafting himself with “sacred smoke” of purification offered him by the indigenous shaman, before ascending to the altar to begin Mass.

The event was reported by the Canadian news agency The Catholic Register: “The Mass began with a smudging ceremony before the altar. Dr. Peter Menzies, Anishawbek from the Sagamok First Nation, said it was an honour to be asked to lead the smudging ceremony at the cathedral.”

“An expert in aboriginal children’s mental health and addictions, Menzies usually treats smudging as part of his personal spiritual practice and does not often receive requests from parishes,” the report continued. “‘When I’m asked, I will do it,’ he told The Catholic Register.”

In his homily, although Collins called the “Gospel of Jesus Christ” “the norm for us all,” he also said the Church should “appreciate and celebrate the traditions of the indigenous peoples,” failing to distinguish those indigenous traditions compatible with the Faith from those that stand contrary to the practice of the Christian religion, such as the worship of the forces of nature, the invocation of the spirits of the dead, and rituals of........

Collins and the Pachamama Pope have more respect for pagans, muslims, homosexuals, adulterers, etc. than they do for the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Isn’t the catholic incense ritual analogous?

Smudging, especially with smoldering sage, may have some pagan use, but lots of ordinary people swear by it to get rid of bad spirits and negative emotions.

It also acts as a repellent for people with evil intent, be they methamphetamine users, who really abhor its smell, and undercover cops, who will abandon the area and take off with just a whiff.

I knew people that would carry around canisters of sage spice, put a few pinches in an ashtray and set it to smoldering with a lighter, while eating alfresco.

So, it might indeed be part of some “pagan ritual” somewhere, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work.

The Church is currently undergoing its biggest crisis in a very very long time. The infiltration by anti-Christian subversives began in the late 60’s and early 70’s. The era of free love. AKA F anything that moves era.
During that time The Church was in a panic about the lack of the devout volunteering to become Priests.
I am not Catholic. I am Greek Orthodox. But, I grew up in a heavily Catholic area. My wife is Catholic. Nearly all of my friends were Catholic. I witnessed this firsthand. The gay infiltration of the Catholic Church was an unstated problem.
But, the Catholic Church was in such a panic about the dwindling volunteers for the priesthood they turned a blind eye to this issue. Many decades later they are the victims of their blind stupidity.
Nominating a blatantly Socialist Preist with no Biblical loyalty is a continuation of the rapid decline of the Catholic Church. Francis is a disaster that was an obvious disaster to anyone paying attention.

No.

"And all the multitude of the people was praying without, at the hour of incense." [Luke 1:10]

"And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the altar of incense." [Luke 1:11]

"And another angel came, and stood before the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given to him much incense, that he should offer of the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar, which is before the throne of God." [Apocalypse (Revelation) 8:3]

Do you have any more stupid comments?

In view that this is not a caucus thread, it would seem a great opportunity for a teachable moment, since the scriptures you admirably cited do not mention which herbs or plants were used in the hour / altar of incense. What are the incense compounds in use in the Catholic Church today, and how were the formulae determined?

Catholic church incense is a resin incense of benzoin, frankincense, and myrrh.

"And entering into the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and falling down they adored him; and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh."
[Matthew 2:11]

The Lord said to Moses, “Take sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum, sweet spices with pure frankincense (of each shall there be an equal part), and make an incense blended as by the perfumer, seasoned with salt, pure and holy. You shall beat some of it very small, and put part of it before the testimony in the tent of meeting where I shall meet with you. It shall be most holy for you.

Thank you. I see that bezoin is a balsamic resin. The thing I have to compare that to is balsamic vinegar, very sweet.

Lovely. The stacte, onycha and galbanum apparently are very rare. The dictionary says they are associated with the ancient Jewish rituals from tabernacle days. Thank you for the info.
