Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Exodus 17
Water From the Rock
17 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.”
Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”
3 But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”
4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”
5 The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah[a] and Meribah[b] because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven,
Blessed Be Your Glorious Name Forever!
We Come Into Your Holy Presence
With Praise and Singing.
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The One True God of Abraham!
Ancient of Days,
Rock of Ages,
LORD of Hosts,
Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent,
You know the end from the beginning,
And the beginning from the end.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Psalm 100
A Psalm of thanksgiving.
1 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Worship the Lord with gladness;
come into his presence with singing.
3 Know that the Lord is God.
It is he that made us, and we are his;*
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him, bless his name.
5 For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures for ever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.

We always had the latest in electronics, and our TV set had a rectangular screen instead of a round one. While neighbors had mere "Rabbit Ears" antennae on their sets, our Dad climbed up onto the roof of our house and installed a space-age antenna that turned when you changed the channel. So I watched Soupy Sales and Ernie Kovacs (my two favorite shows) in crystal-clear Black and White that was superior to all the neighbor's sets.
Sometimes, even with our space age technology, the set would still go haywire. It was then that Dad would employ the scientific technique of whacking the top of the TV with the flat of his palm. That was usually enough to stabilize the signal.
I loved spooky stories and science fiction, and a new series was advertised called The Outer Limits. I turned on the set ahead of time to let it "warm up". After a couple of commercials, it was magic time. The new series was about to begin. Suddenly, the TV went haywire. Horizontal bands streamed across the screen Static noise came out of the speaker. And Dad wasn't home to fix it. I started slapping the top of the TV till my hand hurt, to no avail. Then a voice came out of the spreaker:
There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter.
Aha! What a great Intro!
Decades later, hubby and I were watching the final episode of "The Sopranos". TV was now provided by a Cable or a Satellite Dish, and there was no need for Rabbit Ears or a Roof Antenna. The TV was thinner because the Cathode-Ray Tube had been replaced by LEDs, plasma, or some weird substance.
Tony Soprano, his wife Camella, and Tony Jr. were seated in a restaurant while daughter Meadow was outside struggling to parallel park in order to join her family for dinner. As they waited for Meadow, the family ordered a bottle of red wine which was brought to the table along with a basket of bread. Tony poured the wine, broke the bread, and passed it around. My husband, who was Jewish, remarked:
"Look, ML, they are having Communion. This is their Last Supper. They are going to get whacked."
Just as he said that, a black sedan pulls up outdoors and several tough guys exit the car and go into the rstaurant. While Meadow is still trying to park the car, Tony puts a few coins in the Juke Box and chooses the Journey hit "Don't Stop Believing".
Meadow finally joins the family and she sits down. One of the tough guys goes into the rest room, and suddenly...the Screen Went BLACK!
"Nooooo!" I shouted, "How can the cable go out at the climax of watching this show faithfully for NINE SEASONS!" Call the Cable Company!"
I ran over to the set and began whacking it, with my palm, but of course that didn't work. That was the intentional ending of The Sopranos. And people have been griping about it ever since. I can't even heear "Don't Stop Believing" without thinking about it.
The first time Moses was to receive water From the Rock, he was instructed to strike the Rock with his staff. Water gushed out, and saved the lives of the Israelites and their livestock. The first time, hitting the Rock was appropriate. But it was to be just that once.
Years later, Moses is once again faced with an angry mob because of the lack of water. God instructs Moses to just "Speak to the Rock" this time. The Rock was struck once, years before, and it was once and for all. Now Moses could have a "relationship" with the Rock and just Ask.
But, by this time, Moses had had it with the constant grumbling and complaining, kvetching and moaning, from dawn til dusk about everything. His frustration had hit the boiling point, and in his wrath he WHACKED the Rock with his staff as he yelled at the people in his fury.
God was faithful to provide water at this critical moment, but Moses had violated an Eternal Truth when he whacked the Rock. Just as all people are appointed to die once, and after that, the Judgement, and the Rock was only to be struck ONCE, and, after that, just spoken to, Messiah was only to die ONCE, and after that, we have a relationship with Him. He does not have to be crucified "Day in Day Out" for Him to be our Savior. Just Ask and He will fill you with Fountains of Living Water.
Because of this transgression, Moses was denied entry into the Promised Land. It was the act of disobedience at the second "Water From The Rock" incident that got him.

Beautifully interpreted—thank you!
AMEN!
Hugh Ross, our Sunday School teacher, once had the class research those stories. He broke the class into four groups and had each group use a concordance to look up every single instance of one of these four words: rock, water, strike, speak. (My group studied “rock” and soon alighted upon 1 Corinthians 10:4.) Of course, we arrived at the same conclusion you did.

Like The Sopranos, there was a similar unresolved ending for No Country for Old Men.
As for Moses, he eventually did make it into the Promised Land. Remember the Transfiguration?
