Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 29

Jacob Arrives in Paddan Aram

29 Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples. 2 There he saw a well in the open country, with three flocks of sheep lying near it because the flocks were watered from that well. The stone over the mouth of the well was large. 3 When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone away from the well’s mouth and water the sheep. Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well.

4 Jacob asked the shepherds, “My brothers, where are you from?”

“We’re from Harran,” they replied.

5 He said to them, “Do you know Laban, Nahor’s grandson?”

“Yes, we know him,” they answered.

6 Then Jacob asked them, “Is he well?”

“Yes, he is,” they said, “and here comes his daughter Rachel with the sheep.”

7 “Look,” he said, “the sun is still high; it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture.”

8 “We can’t,” they replied, “until all the flocks are gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water the sheep.”

9 While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherd. 10 When Jacob saw Rachel daughter of his uncle Laban, and Laban’s sheep, he went over and rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well and watered his uncle’s sheep. 11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel and began to weep aloud. 12 He had told Rachel that he was a relative of her father and a son of Rebekah. So she ran and told her father.

13 As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he hurried to meet him. He embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his home, and there Jacob told him all these things. 14 Then Laban said to him, “You are my own flesh and blood.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father Who Art In Heaven,
How Blessed, Hallowed, and Sanctified
Is Your Most Holy Name!
We Worship You,
And You Alone,
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are The One True God of The Universe!
Forgive us, LORD,
if we ever elevate ourselves above You in our own estimation!
Forgive us for our Pride and Hubris!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

As I have mentioned in previous posts, New England has a plethora of stone walls, meandering through woodlands and fields, and causing no end of grief for landscapers and gardeners who want to tame the land to their specifications. These walls are mostly made of granite, and the stones are nearly all small enough for one rugged farmer to dislodge as he is plowing.

The stones were deposited deep down in the soil during the Ice Age, and cultivating the topsoil begins a process of stones rising to the surface with each new year of plowing. Hence, the farmer gets a new crop of stones every Spring, which he has to dislodge and pile onto the growing stone walls at the edges of his field. Granite is extremely heavy, so the average stone in the wall is probably less than a foot in diameter. The larger stones would take two or more people to move them, a lever, or even a horse-drawn device.

I encountered such a stone while laying out my herb garden. At first, it seemed to be an everage sized rock. Then, the more I dug around it, the bigger it became. Finally, I cleared the dirt and saw that it was over a foot and a half in diameter. I would have been smarter to just cover it up and forget about it. But by now, I was determined. I went into the shed and got a two-by-four to use as a lever. I fashioned a fulcrum our of another big rock and heaved. The Big Rock slowly emerged from the earth, and took up residence right next to the hole. I left it there as a Landscaping Feature, because it wasn't going to move again. And I was dirty, sweaty, and Exhausted. Enough hard labor for one day, and I ached for days afterwards.

There was a good reason the stone could not be removed from the well until all of the shepherds in the region had gathered to water the sheep. It took a whole crowd of big burly guys to move the heavy stone! And Rachel certainly couldn't do it. She had to rely on a whole community just to get water for her sheep. And so, many people, who may not have even liked each other, and were certainly rivals for grazing rights for their flocks, HAD to cooperate at least once a day or die of thirst.

Jacob, though, was love-struck and smitten by Rachel's beauty and manner. Perhaps he was trying to be Macho, or trying to impress Rachel, but he charged right in and moved the stone all by himself. (As Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy would say "It was Adrenaline! That what it was, Adrenaline!"). But we know that it wasn't just Machismo, or Adrenaline, or any other non-spiritual power that moved the stone. Jacob was in LOVE.

There is another Stone in the Bible that needed moving. It had taken an entire group of Roman Soldiers to put it in place. Mary Magdeline and the other women went to the Tomb of Jesus to anoint His Body, as was the custom. But as they approached the grave, they wondered among themselves, "Who will move the Stone?"

When they arrived, they found that the Stone had already been moved. It had not been moved by Roman Soldiers, or by Jesus's Disciples, or by a community of shepherds.

It was moved by ONE MAN, Who had been Raised from the Dead by the Power of LOVE.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 53

To the leader: according to Mahalath. A Maskil of David.

1 Fools say in their hearts, ‘There is no God.’
They are corrupt, they commit abominable acts;
there is no one who does good.

2 God looks down from heaven on humankind
to see if there are any who are wise,
who seek after God.

3 They have all fallen away, they are all alike perverse;
there is no one who does good,
no, not one.

4 Have they no knowledge, those evildoers,
who eat up my people as they eat bread,
and do not call upon God?

5 There they shall be in great terror,
in terror such as has not been.
For God will scatter the bones of the ungodly;*
they will be put to shame,* for God has rejected them.

6 O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of his people,
Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.

Never made that connection with the Stones before.

Me neither. It just came to me this morning as I was writing the Devotional.

Also...moving the stone provided fresh, living water to the sheep.

I'll bet we can come up with more parallels...a Beautiful Bride, Jacob loving the younger sister (the older shall seve the younger), and more.
