Genesis 21

The Birth of Isaac

21 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac[a] to the son Sarah bore him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

6 Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7 And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”

Hurricane Wilma left my house with over $100,000 worth of damage (including the roof) and the Insurance company gave us $18,000, after which they promply fled the State of Florida, leaving millions of people without homeowners insurance. Since we didn't have enough money to do essential repairs, we were convinced to refinance the mortgage right in the midst of the "Housing Bubble". When the "bubble" burst, we were over $200,000 underwater on our mortgage. A Miami Lawyer convinced us that the bank had engaged in "Predatory Lending" and we could sue for a "Quiet Title" due to the bank's illegal activities. Of course that meant paying the Lawyer instead of the Bank. While, in theory, the Lawyer was probably correct, This action destroyed our credit and put our house in foreclosure. The Lawyer kept fighting the bank, we kept paying the Lawyer, and continued to live in our home.

Then, my husband, who worked for a big Computer Firewall Company that begins with "M", lost his job, along with 35 other middle-aged computer experts, because "M" decided to close the Florida Office. ("M" has since died in jail, supposedly by his own hand.) Anyway, for about a year we struggled along, with no job, no credit, and "in foreclosure" as the Lawyer told us that the process of obtaining a "Quiet Title" could take as long as five years. At this point I have no idea how true that was, or if we were just being exploited.

In 2011, my husband took his own life. He was on medication for depression, so a flood of mail and phone calls ensued trying to convince me to sue Big Pharma. These guys were knocking on my door before I even had a chance to bury my husband.

My husband had done the deed with a shotgun on the second floor of our house, which, once again, put holes in the roof, and necessitated the services of the Police HAZMAT Team, which cost an additional $3000 on top of another $20,000 worth of damage to the roof, carpeting, and walls. An adjuster from the NEW insurace company that the Governor (whose name I will not mention) organized to take care of people who had lost their insurance after Hurricane Wilma. Due to "depreciation" the adjusted amount of the claim came to a little over $11,000. I was forced to accept that and pay the rest out-of-pocket.

My husband's life insurance policy refused to pay the full amount because it was ruled a suicide (fine print). And so, I used the little payout of $20,000 to fix the roof, replace the carpeting, and buy paint for the walls which I painted myself. At least, I thought, the homeowners insurance check of $11,000 would help defray some of the cost. When the check finally came, it was made out to The Bank that held my Mortgage, and they refused to sign off on it because I was in Foreclosure. So I just filed the check away somewhere, and began the process of Short-Selling my house. Of course, then I had to find a place to live.

For some crazy reason, Senior Housing in Florida prohibits Motorcycles and Dogs over 30 pounds. I had Lynn-DAH (a black Lab/Chow) who weighed 50, and Blue, my 93FXR Superglide, which turns 30 Today, according to her VIN Number (Born in York, PA on this day in 1992). The Property Manager at a trailer park for over 55 active adults suggested I sell Blue and euthanize Lynn-DAH, so I could purchase a total wreack of a double-wide trailer in "their" community. I told her where she could stuff her doublewide. Anyway, I finally found a nice apartment that cost my entire Social Security check that accepted Blue and Lynn-DAH (for an additional monthly fee, of course!) and lived there for three years. During that time, I constructed and designed my own in-home Recording Studio, became a Music Minister in a Biker Church, and had Recitals every year for my twenty+ Music Students.

In October of 2015, my Brother called me. Mom needed in-home care, and, since I wasn't doing anything in Florida, could I come back to Boston and live with Mom? Well of course. No Question about it. So I gave away all my furniture, clothes, linens, sound equipment, and furniture, and said goodbye to my students, my congregation, and my friends. Then my Brothers drove to Florida and brought me to Boston with Lynn-DAH, Blue, My Bass, My Guitar, My Computer, and the clothes on my back. Mom passed away six days after my arrival in Boston.

So now I had to find another place to live. My youngest sister's husband suffers from Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease, so I figured I would live near her so I could help out when the need arose.

Sis found a Mobile Home in the South Shore area, but it needed work. I stayed at Mom's in a house that was for sale and empty, but went daily to the Mobile Home to help clean up, paint, and repair it. While I was walking Lynn-DAH around the park, I saw another trailer being repaired. I inquired, and found out it was for sale. I immediately made an offer and set the deal in motion. Meanwhile, I would have no money until Mom's house sold, so I had to wait for the first domino to fall, living in a corner of the house and showing it for inspections and potential buyers. (We had a gret realtor but I couldn't buy MY trailer yet, and I had to live SOMEWHERE.)

Finally, Mom's house sold and I was able to buy my trailer. They had done a great job restoring the interior, but it had a flat rubber roof that collected water. There was a swamp on my roof that was so nasty that I could have bred alligators up there. I got an estimate for the installation (from scratch) of a peaked roof. It came to $11,000. Now where would I get THAT?

The next day, I got a letter from the State of Florida. They had an seven-year-old uncashed check for me for $11,000. It was also made out to The Bank that had held my mortgage. If the Mortgage had been satisfied, and I could prove it, the check would be all mine. I looked through all my papers. There, in the contract for the Short Sale of my house was the page that said that the Mortgage had been satisfied. I faxed it to Florida, received the check the next week, had the roof installed, and paid the contractor. It was as if God was holding that check for me in Escrow until I REALLY needed it.

Today's story is unusually long, and most of you have heard it before, as I had kept up this Thread during the whole epic saga. Just like Sarah, we often try to hasten God's timing to suit our own agenda. The results (like with Hagar and Ishmael) can be tragic and History-Changing. God keeps His Promises, but in His Own Time. It is a hard lesson, but is still applicable today.
