Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 18

Abraham Pleads for Sodom

16 When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17 Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.[c] 19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”

20 Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous 21 that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”

22 The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.[d] 23 Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare[e] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

26 The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

27 Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”

“If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”

29 Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?”

He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”

30 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?”

He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

31 Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”

He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”

32 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?”

He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”

33 When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.

and we are the Sheep of Your Pasture.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.

As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,

Downtown Boston has a lot of strange, crooked little streets and alleys. This is attributed to the Colonial Days, when cows would wander down to Boston Common every morning to graze, and then would wend their way back up Beacon Hill to their owners. Eventually, dwellings popped up alongside these "cowpaths", thus giving Boston a weird, Casbah-like street map which wasn't changed until the Back Bay was filled in and nice straight avenues were introduced. The area on one side of the Common was Beacon Hill, with all the little streets and alleys, and eventually, the State House and some very old but elegant townhomes. The other side of the Common, across from the Statehouse, became the Theater District and High-End Department Stores. When I was about 12, the city was so safe and "proper" that my cousin and I could take the train into town and go to Jordan Marsh, Filenes, or even the Famous "Filenes Basement" (SUCH BARGAINS!). However, in the late 60's, the atmosphere Downtown had begun to change. Because of TV perhaps, the theaters began to close or change their fare from wholesome movies to "Adult" fare. Along with that came Prostitution and her sister "Crime". The Theater District became known as "The Combat Zone." We still liked going Downtown, but avoided The Combat Zone if we valued our lives.

Subsequent Urban Planning and Developement has rejuvenated the area, rerouting vehicular traffic, and making it pedestrian-friendly. The area was renamed "Downtown Crossing", but it came with its own set of urban problems. Since there are no more cars allowed in the area, people have taken their shopping preferences elsewhere, to suburban malls where there is plenty of parking. My last foray into the Theater District, in 2017, involved parking almost a mile away in Government Center and walking to the Orpheum Theater to see The Tedeschi-Trucks Band, a local gal who is an awesome guitarist in the tradition of the Allman Brothers. I don't go into town much at all now because there is no place to park my car.

Evidently, many people feel the same, as the famous Filene's Basement no longer exists. Neither do R.H. Stearns, Filenes, or Raymonds. Jordan Marsh also failed, and was bought by Macy's, but I don't even know if it's there aymore, as Macy's has stores in most of the suburban malls. And, we must not forget what online shopping has done to brick-and-mortor businesses.

And so, for all their Urban Planning, cute wrought-iron lampposts, brick pavers, pedestrian walkways, and limted vehicle access, Downtown Crossing has begun to decay. Crime has crept back up Washington Street. The "Planners" tried to make the area more "Human" and "Natural", but they forgot all about Human Nature!

On a side note, in 1975, I was a Bicycle Messenger in Boston. As I zipped through the crooked alleys and cowpath streets, I saw a whole lot of white outlines on the pavement. These outlines were of people who had died (or were murdered) on the street. I was so naive, and so conditioned to think of Boston as a "safe city" that I assumed that this was a form of "Street Art" or Grafitti. It never occurred to me at the time that that was a place where somebody had DIED.

We read how Lot chose the better portion when given the opportunity. He moved with his entire family into the City of Sodom. Sodom was already a "Combat Zone", with a lot more than just sexual sin going on. Like Boston with the "Adult Theaters" metastasizing into a high-crime area, Sodom and the other Cities of the Plain became centers of Violence, Rape, Kidnapping, Murder, Warfare, Gangsters, Mob Rule, and Crime. It would be impossible for Lot to live there and not be influenced by it.

And yet, here is Abraham, interceding for the city. He pleads with God, bargains with Him, and and keeps "lowering the bar" to save the people of that wretched city. Finally, God agrees to rescue Lot and his family.

This Passage teaches a lot about Intercessory Prayer. Abaham isn't just pleading for his relatives; he is pleading for the whole city. Sometimes we are called to pray for people we don't even LIKE. I am going through something like that right now. A neighbor who has harassed and insulted me is near the top of my prayer list. I have to grit my teeth as I pray for the man's deliverence from whatever demons he is struggling with, but I have to be obedient to God, Who tells us to pray for our enemies. We don't pray for them to be successful in their evil ways, but to be delivered from evil.

And Abraham gves us a great example of that kind of prayer.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

_ ND the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.

And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;

I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.

And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?

Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?

That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.

And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD, which am but dust and ashes:

Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.

And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake.

And he said unto him, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.

And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake.

And he said, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.

And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.

I have the same neighbor that I need to pray for.

It ain't easy. Here's my prayer that I say every time I pass his house:

Dear Father,
In obedience to Your Word, I pray for (name of neighbor)
I pray that You will deliver him from whatever demons oppress, depress, or possess him.
I pray that he be healed of any mental illness that causes him such paranoia and hostility.
I pray that he be freed from bitterness and hatred, and is able to escape any childhood trauma that may have contributed to his adult antisocial behavior.
I pray that he repent of his sin and be saved.
In Jesus Name, Amen.

Of course, if he knew I was praying for him, he would probably even hate me MORE! LOL.

Of course, I did go to the Police so that his verbal abuse and harassment was documented. After years of working in Health Care, I know that:

“IF IT AIN’T DOCUMENTED,
IT NEVER HAPPENED.”

Psalm 33

1 Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous.
Praise befits the upright.
2 Praise the Lord with the lyre;
make melody to him with the harp of ten strings.
3 Sing to him a new song;
play skilfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

4 For the word of the Lord is upright,
and all his work is done in faithfulness.
5 He loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
and all their host by the breath of his mouth.
7 He gathered the waters of the sea as in a bottle;
he put the deeps in storehouses.

8 Let all the earth fear the Lord;
let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
9 For he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.

10 The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 The counsel of the Lord stands for ever,
the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
12 Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage.

13 The Lord looks down from heaven;
he sees all humankind.
14 From where he sits enthroned he watches
all the inhabitants of the earth—
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all,
and observes all their deeds.
16 A king is not saved by his great army;
a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 The war horse is a vain hope for victory,
and by its great might it cannot save.

18 Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 to deliver their soul from death,
and to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul waits for the Lord;
he is our help and shield.
21 Our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.
