ABSTRACT: Jesus of Nazareth underwent Jewish and Roman trials, was flogged, and was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The scourging produced deep stripelike lacerations and appreciable blood loss, and it probably set the stage for hypovolemic shock as evidenced by the fact that Jesus was too weakened to carry the crossbar (patibulum) to Golgotha. At the site of crucifixion his wrists were nailed to the patibulum, and after the patibulum was lifted onto the upright post, (stipes) his feet were nailed to the stipes. The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly, death resulted primarily from hypovolemic shock and exhaustion asphyxia. Jesus’ death was ensured by the thrust of a soldier’s spear into his side. Modern medical interpretation of the historical evidence indicates that that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross. Other references on this topic. “A Doctor At Calvary: The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ as Described by a Surgeon” Pierre Barbet, M.D. This is probably the single best book. I have given it to several priests over the years as a gift for Lent. “The Crucifixion ol Jesus, Completely Revised and Expanded, A Forensic Inquiry” by Frederick T. Zugibe. If you get the two-disc, Definitive Edition of the “Passion of The Christ” he is one of the people interviewed in the section on crucifixition. DVD “How Jesus Died: The Final 18 Hours” Trinity Pictures Ltd. This includes sections with interviews with Frederick Zugibe and with Dr. John Bonica, one of the founding fathers of the modern study and understanding of pain and its treatment. DVD “Crucifixtion” The History Channel. DVD "Behold the Man" Hugh Ross

Good Friday is more holy than the resurrection to me. I’m beyond grateful for his sacrifice. Amen.

He got what we deserve. Creator of the universe. One day we will see Him. Some with great joy, others with dread. Come to Him while you can.

According to “The Original Pieta Prayer Book”:
St Brigit of Sweden wanted to know the number of blows Our Lord received during His Passion. He one day appeared to her and said: “I received 5480 blows on My Body. If you wish to honor them in some way, say 15 Our Fathers and 15 Hail Marys with the following prayers for a whole year. When the year is up you will have honored each of My Wounds.”

His resurrection is very holy. If he did not rise again, his death would mean nothing to us.
To: Library Lady
I agree. It’s just the price that was paid was the highest and the resurrection wouldn’t have been possible.

Every century has seen different groups or persons try to eliminate the message and hope that Only Jesus Christ can bring to a sinful year. Not succeeded

1. I don’t believe Jesus did any such thing. Adding to the bible is forbidden.
2. Anything coming from the Roman Catholic Church is suspect.

“I don’t believe Jesus did any such thing.”
You don’t believe Jesus suffered horribly?
“Adding to the bible is forbidden.”
No one is doing that here.
“Anything coming from the Roman Catholic Church is suspect.”
Says you? That’s suspect.

As horrific as crucifixion and esp. that of Christ was, the horror that I believe He foresaw was not simply that of the suffering of crucifixion by the long-suffering Man of Sorrows," (Isaiah 53:3) but becoming sin for us as the Pure sinless One who knew no sin, (1 Co,. 5:21; 1 Pt. 2:22-24) and hated iniquity and loved righteousness (Hebrews 1:9) as no other man, and losing that sacred fellowship with the Father which He had from everlasting.
An inadequate and crude analogy (and I am reluctant to be so gross) would be for us to be immersed and drown in a cesspool, drinking of its filth. So great salvation at so great a price for so great a multitude, by the Great God and Savior. Glory to God.
