Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Revelation 4

The Throne in Heaven

4 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. 3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. 4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits[a] of God. 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.

In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:

“‘Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God Almighty,’[b]

who was, and is, and is to come.”

9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

11  “You are worthy, our Lord and God,
    to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
    and by your will they were created
    and have their being.”

Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven,
How Wonderful and Magnificent is Your Most Holy Name!
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are Holy,
You Alone Are The Most High!
Omnipotent,
Omniscient,
And Omnipresent,
You Know The End from the Beginning
and the Beginning from the End.
We Bless Your Name and Thank You,
Most Gracious and Hallowed LORD,
For Your Holy Word,
While Sometimes cryptic and disturbing,
Is Always True and Mighty,
and Cuts to the Heart of Things like a Two Edged Sword!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

John's Vision of Heaven is impossible to depict, although artists have been trying to do so for 2000 years. My favorite images are done on computer graphics, because the artist is essentially painting with light. But even those pale in comparison to whatever the real vision looked like.

The Twenty-Four Elders, the Four Living Creatures, the Rainbow Throne shining like an Emerald Clear as Glass, and the Millions of Angels of varying rank all Praising God, are beyond our imagination. I will do my usual job of posting graphics, but not one of them will come to the reality of Heaven.

Several Old Testament Prophets had similar Visions of Heaven, and in Isaiah Chapter 6, we even have the same Prayer:

“‘Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God Almighty,

who was, and is, and is to come.”

As I noted, this Prayer of Rapturous Praise is included in the Liturgies of Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, and Jewish rites. It may be the word "Sanctus", "Kadosh", or "Holy", but they all mean the same thing. God is so Holy that even Angels are overwhelmed by His Presence. Of all the types of Prayer that we have discussed in this long series, perhaps this is the most Powerful kind of Prayer.

We have spoken of Blessing Prayer, Repenting Prayer, Petitioning Prayer, Lamenting Prayer, Teaching Prayer, Doxology Prayer, Preaching Prayer, Recounting God's Deeds in Prayer, and Surrendering Prayer. But this Prayer, the Prayer of Rapturous Praise and being overwhelmed by God's Glory, is the very Prayer the Angels sing before The Throne of God, witnessed by both Isaiah and John.

And now, we can sing it too.
