Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

James 3
Taming the Tongue
3 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.
3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Excellent is Your name Over All The Earth!
How Magnificent,
How Glorious,
and How Altogether Lovely!
And How Excellent is Your Scripture,
Your Eternal Word,
which You have Preserved to This Day.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

James 3
(Taming the Tongue)
Eleven-Year-Old Rachel was facing a dilemma. She had diligently practiced the chords to an iconic rock song and was ready to play it in the recital. The song was not easy, and had ten different chords in it, including "barre chords", so I offered to sing while she played guitar. Rachel insisted that she was quite capable of singing it herself, so I printed out the lyrics. Her eyes widened when she saw a line in the second verse:
"This could be heaven, or this could be hell."
"What am I gonna do?" she wailed. "My mother doesn't allow me to say 'Hell'!"
I suggested we tweak the lyrics to something like "I knew this was not going well" or something like that, but it was unacceptable to her. I suggested that she talk to Mom and ask for a special dispensation to sing the lyric, but Rachel wanted the song to be a surprise. There was a lot of drama, but in the end, Rachel sang the whole song and just whispered "hell" and sang on.
Rachel had a twin sister who also took lessons. The sibling rivalry between the two was thick, and sometimes Rachel would say some very mean things to her less flamboyant sister. Sometimes these mean things were a LOT worse than saying the word "Hell". The tongue that sings songs can also wound a person deeply.
As a music teacher, my job is to teach music, not to be a "change agent" or undermine a parent's authority. And yet, in this particular case, I intimated to Rachel that some of the barbs she tossed so freely at her sister were a lot worse than saying the word "Hell". I risked losing the job by saying that, but I couldn't help myself.
As James says in this Passage, being a Teacher is a special calling that is not to be taken lightly.

Fear of the World or Fear of the Lord
“They are more determined by fear of what others will
think of them—fears of failure and rejection in the
world, loss of respect of neighbors and superiors and
those around them—than they are determined by fear
of me and fear of infidelity to my word … You cannot
be considered at this point in the center of the battle
and the conflict that is going on.”

Just yesterday, in a time of reflection and repentance, I had asked the LORD to turn every curse I have said against someone I had conflicts, angers and bitternesses with, into a blessing. Its hard when you hear your own voice for what it was and ask the LORD to change its tune in the lives of those who are now estranged. Joining in prayer.
