“Even while recognizing the good care afforded them by Catholic Charities 60 years ago, they begrudge that same care being extended to migrant children today.”
The Archbishop of Miami has decried Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ comments this week belittling the plight of unaccompanied minors fleeing Central America for the United States.
“At Governor DeSantis’ Monday meeting with a few former Pedro Pan kids in Miami’s Museum of the Cuban Diaspora, he described any comparison of unaccompanied minors from Cuba in the early 60’s with those from Central America today as ‘disgusting’”, Archbishop Thomas Wenski said during a Feb. 10 press conference.
“This was a new low in the zero-sum politics of our divisive times. Children are children — and no child should be deemed ‘disgusting’ — especially by a public servant,” he continued.
DeSantis was joined at the Feb. 7 roundtable by several individuals who benefited from Operation Pedro Pan, a joint initiative between the Catholic Church and the U.S. government in the earrly 1960s that airlifted more than 14,000 unaccompanied minors from Cuba to the United States.
The initiative aimed to protect Cuban children from communist indoctrination.
Today’s unaccompanied minors — coming mainly from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador — are not much different from those from Cuba 60 years ago, Wenski wrote in a Jan. 14 column.
“The lack of solidarity of this group of former unaccompanied minors from Cuba with similarly situated children today was disappointing,” the archbishop said Feb. 10. “Even while recognizing the good care afforded them by Catholic Charities 60 years ago, they begrudge that same care being extended to migrant children today.”

Flock off your Archbishopness.
God. Heaven. Salvation. Stay in your lane...
If the Archbishop don’t like it he can go to Helen Wait.
Waaaaah!
I guess there are not enough little boys in church.
is Desantis cutting into your federal money archbishop?
after all..you must be ever so concerned about the human smuggling and fetynal
Clearly a disgusting comparison...
DeSantis has it exactly right...
The Cuban refugees came here for freedom and to work...
They successfully assimilated into our western civilization...
Even the few bad ones (gangsters) at least provided the basis for some good movies...
Most of the Cuban refugees did not hide, did not suck up welfare generation after generation, did not avoid taxes, and did not steal 20-billion dollars a year by sending untaxed dollars back to the home country... (Which is what the MIVs flooding our country have been doing for 3-decades...)
If any in the Catholic hierarchy believe these Hispanics will revive their dying Church, they are gravely mistaken. My area in NJ has been Ground Zero for Hispanic re-settlement, and we are still closing parishes left and right. Some may attend while their children receive a heavily subsidized private education (to avoid the ghetto schools), but then they disappear - and they don’t financially support the parish very much in the meantime.
On top of that, the American Catholics are taxed so heavily to provide for these newcomers that their donations sink - it isn’t like having a car or home re-possessed, or your electricity or water turned off, if you don’t give your envelope each week. The young ones in particular are costly; our high property taxes in NJ go more than 2/3 to our public school systems.
That means I don’t even have to read the governors comments to know they were spot on 🤪
Some people need to learn to speak in private instead of creating unnecessary scandals. I’m sure the Governor would have a meeting with the Archbishop so as to discuss their differences.
Members of the Catholic clergy preying on underage boys is disgusting.
Obviously DeSantis was not “deeming the children disgusting.”
It takes someone of extremely low moral character to create a false impression of someone’s words like that.
Right about Cubans. I lived in Boca Raton in the ‘80s, drove down to Little Cuba in Miami on Saturdays to have WONDERFUL Cafe Cubana, which could not be stronger, and super nice pastries. My friend from Italy visited me and she loved it too.
Then, while it was still illegal, two friends from. Seattle and I went to Castro’s Havana. What a freaking mess that was. Every single Cuban we met wanted us to help them get out of there. I posted a long thread here about that visit. One of my first on FR.
DeSantis rocks.
Liberal Leftist cesspool Miami, nuff said.
“Members of the Catholic clergy preying on underage boys is disgusting.”
Disgusting wherever it takes place. Catholic churches, Christian churches, mosques, Boy Scouts, public schools (way worse than Catholic Church), CNN, private homes
Have heard many Hispanics don’t go to church. Some do. Many go to other Christian churches. Hurts this Catholics to think many Bishops are more interested in government cash than souls.
Funny if Hispanics continue to trend Republican and a 67-33 Dem to 50-50 scenario. Can see Dems returning to “Border Security” now.
Just another prideful 'do-gooder' who is happy to see what he perceives as 'good' financed and supported by everyone else, while he basks in the cold sunlight of supposed virtue.
While, in reality, doing nothing more than aiding and abetting lawbreakers.
We have a lot of evangelical churches with Hispanic congregations; our own Spanish-language Masses (in heavily Hispanic areas where many don’t speak English) aren’t heavily attended. FWIW, the English Masses aren’t, either.
Faith without works is dead.
That said, it is an invasion, not immigration.
And giving aid and comfort to invaders is treason.
