Philippians 4

Closing Appeal for Steadfastness and Unity

4 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!

2 I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. 3 Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.

Final Exhortations

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.


Although there are many organic reasons for mental illness, there is a whole classification of mental and phyical disorders that are exacerbated by stress. These are called "Psychosomatic" Illnesses, and are not just "in the patient's imagination". The word "psychosomatic" comes from two Greek words meaning "mind" and "body", and shows the link between the two. Constant worry and anxiety will release stress hormones that prepare the body for battle, and then, when no combat occurs, the body has no way to discharge them. (For the record, I am not a doctor. These observations are from life).

Some people feel that it is virtuous to worry, as it shows "concern". But, when one is powerless to change a situation, how is worrying going to help? The situation continues, and the worrying (hurt, unforgiveness, fear, doubt, etc) is turned INWARD, where it does a lot of damage.

A few real diseases that can be traced to stress are: Anxiety Disorder, Stomach Ulcers, Sleep Disorder, Eating Disorders, Addictions, and so on. While some of these may have an organic component, they are made worse by worrying. Some people are too quick to say "It's all in your mind," and there is a somatic result of worrying that can be treated with medication or surgery. The treatments, however, will only last until the next stressful situation comes up. There has got to be a better way of breaking up this vicious Mind-Body struggle.

If you remember some earlier discussions we have had on the subject of prayer, there is a third element to our being. We are not just Body and Mind. We are Body, Mind, and Spirit. You can't break up this Three-Strand Cord and expect to be healthy. The Body and Mind can't function without Nourishment. Neither can your Spirit. Paul provides us with a wonderful "diet" for our spiritual health:

Prayer, Bible Reading and Study, and Gratitude should be as habitual as eating, exercise, bathing, and brushing your teeth. Even when you don't feel like it, you have to eat. It is the same way with prayer. We don't always feel like praying, and it seems more dramatic and "virtuous" to worry and complain, but what is better for your Spiritual, Mental, and Physical Health?

At first it is difficult to give up old habits. Worrying and Complaining have a way of providing a rush of personal satisfaction and can become an end in itself. Comedians make careers out of Worrying and Complaining, which is the bedrock of Stand-Up Comedy. In other words, Neurotic Carping has become a form of "entertainment". (I have had to stop myself on many occasions from doing this very thing. As a story-teller, my stories can easily turn into a complaint session.)

If you have been following this series, you may remember that Jesus and Paul didn't tell us WHAT to pray, but HOW to pray. Rattling off a series of pre-arranged mantras may produce an altered state of conciousnss, as in Eastern Meditation, but it isn't the HEART of Prayer as taught by Jesus or Paul. There is no formula, only an attitude. It has to do with Rejoicing and Gratutde in all circumstances, and trusting in God to do Good, because He IS Good.

Therefore, we set our minds upon that which is Good:

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

This may require a big change in thinking, speaking, and what we do and who we are, but the results are WORTH IT.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
