Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 2

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

29  “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.
30  For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31      which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32  a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”

33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Abba Father,
The Earth is Yours, and The Fullness Thereof.
It is You, and Only You,
Who Designed it All,
From the Tiniest Quark to the Most Massive Singularity in Space.
This is Your Creation,
Your Artwork,
Your Splendor,
Out Your Infinite Imagination,
That You have Created For Your Glory and Pleasure.
You Are So Awesome!
What can we do Except Exclaim,
"How WONDERFUL YOU ARE!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Let all that has Been Concealed,
Be Revealed.

God Bless America.

Psalm 1

1 Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
or sit in the seat of scoffers;
2 but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.
3 They are like trees
planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.

4 The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgement,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6 for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

In the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, there is a disturbing piece of art. It is a depiction of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, with a sword piercing her heart. Most tourists look at it, shudder, and then continue the tour. It is not a pretty piece of art, and, unless the viewer knows the Scriptural Reference, it is unsettling and a bit bizarre. Today's reading in Luke 2 explains the artwork.

Simeon's Prayer is a prayer of fulfillment, satisfaction, contentment, and trust. He had prayed for so long that he would not die before seeing the Lord's Messiah with his own eyes. Since God granted him a long life, he prayed that prayer day-in and day-out for many, many years. Finally, The Holy Spirit revealed to him that this tiny Baby Boy being presented in the Temple, in accordance to the Law of Moses, was The Messiah! "Now," he prays, "I can depart in Peace."

Simeon also addresses the Baby's Mother. By predicting the great sorrow she will undergo, Simeon is expressing the understanding that the Messiah will have to suffer and die. Even though the common idea was of the Messiah as King and Conqueror, the sages had spoken of a Suffering Messiah as well. That Messiah would be like Joseph who had been abused by his own brothers and sold into slavery. Even a casual reading of the Joseph Story in Genesis reveals the incredible Mercy and Forgiveness of Joseph for his brothers who had done UN-forgivable things. It is the Mystery of Redemption that eludes our human capacity. This is the Mercy and Grace that will be extended to those who repent and believe.

Simeon expressed this to Mary as a sword through her heart. In other passages, we find out that Mary treasured all of these mysteries in her heart and pondered them, till they culminated on a dark hill outside the city walls in Jerusalem thirty years later.

This doesn't make the artwork in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher any more pleasing to the eye, but at least we know the story behind it now.

It is easy to see how the image of a sword in Mary’s heart is true to her real pain she felt just thinking in the future of her child enduring suffering.

Prayers up and blessings 🙏

LORD, NOW LETTEST THOU THY SERVANT DEPART IN PEACE

Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple
February 2

"NUNC DIMITTIS"
Geoffrey Burgon
(Click)

Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace:
Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum
Quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum:
Lumen ad revelationem gentium, et gloriam plebis tuae Israel.
(Lucas 2:29-32 BSV)

Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritu Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper et in sæcula sæculorum. Amen.

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
(Luke 2:29-32 KJV)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be.
World without end, Amen.
