Job 16:18-22

18  “Earth, do not cover my blood;

21  on behalf of a man he pleads with God

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

My sister wanted a "Real" Guacamole Bowl. I jokingly referred to the miniature Guac Bowl that was being offered as a prize for donating $75.00 to Jeb Bush's 2016 presidential campaign, but she was NOT amused. LOL. Nevertheless, she loves homemade Guacamole and wanted a REAL one that would serve several people. She makes a delicious recipe that deserves to be in an authentic Guac Bowl carved out of Volcanic Stone. I looked everywhere, and knew it would be possible to buy one on line, but that would be cheating. The "Thrill of the Hunt" is part of the Journey.

I was reminded of this need when I had some Real Homemade Guacamole prepared at our table in a local restaurant. The Guac Bowl was perfect, made from Volcanic Lava Stone and big enough to serve a crowd. But, of course, it belonged to the restaurant. I wondered where THEY got it!

Later that day, I was teaching a student and mentioned my month's long search for a big Guac Bowl for my sister. The student's Mom said,

"I HAVE one of those! You can have it!"

It turns out that it came from the same restaurant where I had lunch earlier in the day. Years ago, the restaurant had changed its name, sold all their fixtures (including the Guac Bowls) and she had bought it then. However, she had never used it to make Guacamole. It was perfect! It was so heavy that I could not put it on my motorcycle and had to go back later in my car to pick it up. Since I had gotten it for free, I would give it to my sister right away, but not before I had a little fun with it first.

I emailed my sister and told her that I had a little gift for her. Then I posed a riddle:

"Forged in the Dire Volcanic Fire
The Vessel fulfils an old desire."

I used the term "Vessel" because the Guac Bowl included a Pestle, and was a reference to a Danny Kaye Skit in an old movie. Since my sister loves old movies, I thought she would get it right away. The Vessel had a Pestle, it was made of Volcanic Rock...it could only be a Guac Bowl!

But she emailed me back: I'M STUMPED! so I wrote another verse to the Riddle:

"Danny Kaye's routine was such a HOOT,
His Mexican Lawyer is also a fruit."

"Abogado" is the Spanish word for Lawyer. "Avocado" is the fruit used to make Guacamole. There are some other politically incorrect puns involved, but you get the picture!

Since, unlike in Samson's riddle about the Honey in the Lion, nobody squealed to my sister, and the Guac Bowl was a huge surprise. I expect guacamole with Thanksgiving Dinner!

OK...it's a silly story smack dab in the midst of a Passage from the Book of Job, but the Spanish word for "Lawyer" comes from the same root as our word for "Advocate". This concept of an "Advocate" before Almighty God, constantly pleading our case, is something we associate with the NEW Testament, not the OLD. And yet, here it is. The 1st Letter of John confirms this:

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. (1 John 2:1 NIV)

Job Knew. John knew. And now YOU know too.
