Episcopalians took a major hit in the year 2020, not only in attendance but also in membership and – unusually – in the pocketbook of the historically affluent denomination.
Statistics released today by the Office of the General Convention show domestic membership in an uninterrupted drop of 61,243 persons to 1,576,702 (-4%) from 1,637,945, while average Sunday attendance declined 60,232 persons to 458,179 (-12%) from 518,411.
These numbers indicate a doubling in the rate of membership decline and a tripling in the rate of attendance decline over the previous year. Median Average Sunday Attendance in the denomination has dropped from 57 persons in 2016 to 50 persons in 2020. Long-term, 61% of Episcopal parishes saw their attendance decline 10% or greater in the past five years.
The statistics cover the year 2020 and are the first affected by COVID-19 restrictions, although the church only reported attendance data for the pre-pandemic period January 1 through and March 1 (missing the traditionally high-attendance periods of Christmas and Easter), similar to the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). Membership and giving, in contrast, were reported across the entire calendar year.
Finances Hit
In a first, the church’s giving metric, known as “plate and pledge” dropped $59 million (-4.3%) from 1,353,835,316 to 1,294,757,071. This is especially noteworthy as the U.S. inflation rate was only 1.4% in 2020, easing from 2.3% in 2019: fewer Sundays to attend corresponded with fewer opportunities to give, and collection plates suffered.

Go woke, go broke.
Go apostate go extinct. There are plenty of non Christian religions.
My uncle was a bishop in a major US city and of a foreign country.
It needs to close its doors. They are apostates.
Many of the other wealthy sodomy denominations are mergers of smaller outfits that were failing. Perhaps that will happen again here. One big church, if you get my drift.
No point in churches these day that don’t follow the bible. And those that do are almost non-existant these days.
I know someone who goes to this "church." "Active in church" looks so good on one's social resume.
In other good news, PCUSA attendance is down to 449,881 although they still claim over 1.2 million members. The 1983 membership at the time of formal union in 1983 was over 3.1 million; peak membership pre-merger of the component parts in 1965 was 4.25 million.
Conservative and moderate Presbyterian bodies have a federation called NAPARC; it has a higher combined attendance than the PCUSA at this point.

May be better than the Rotary Club for networking, as well.
Gosh, I would think that lately, religious belief and conviction would be a real downer on a resume, regardless the denomination.
JUICY ECUMENISM
Don’t waste your time posting to the phantom;
it never ever ever replies to anyone.
Exactly my thoughts as well. Was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopalal Church. Was an acolyte and choir member. But how can they keep people serious about God around when the leadership left Christ to follow Leftism?
I will tolerate being preached to or ministered to by an active sodomite.
I will, in no uncertain terms, not allow an active sodomite to minister to my children.
I was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church. They left me, I didn’t leave them.
I left many years ago and am now a Priest in the ACNA.
Too late for alarm bells already infested with fags. 🤪
It’s a shame, since the Anglican tradition has given so much to the English-speaking Christian world, and Anglican worship is among the most beautiful. The thing is, you can’t have a vital church based on theater only.
Not sure I understand the part about “they left me.” The Catholics left me for sure, but I always enjoyed the Episcopal church. Most beautiful church in our city and I really liked the people and the clergy there.
But then, I really haven’t been to church for a couple of years and have no cue about “sodomy” over there. Can you please clue me in. Thanks.
