A Chicago police chaplain says he is "mortified" that he mistakenly gave Holy Communion to Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a non-Catholic Christian in a same-sex marriage, during Thursday's funeral Mass for fallen city police officer Ella French.
In an interview Friday with Catholic News Agency, Fr. Dan Brandt said just moments prior to Communion he was asked by Cardinal Blase Cupich, the main celebrant, to take his place distributing the Eucharist and became flustered when he saw the mayor step forward as the first in his line.
"You know something, I am to blame for that and I am mortified," Fr. Brandt said.
"I actually gave her Communion, but she was the very first one up there and I wasn't supposed to give out Communion, and at the last second Cardinal Cupich said, 'I'm going to sit out Communion, you take my spot.'
"I apologize for any scandal that my absentmindedness may have caused. It was certainly not intentional and wish I had my wits about me. Or better yet I wish the Cardinal had just given out Communion because I was planning on going back and sitting for the next portion of the Mass and procession," he said.
"I can't apologize enough for anyone who's upset by the fact that she received the Eucharist. That is totally on me and I own it," he said. "And it was an honest mistake and I pray that your readers have the same mercy that I hope the Lord gives me."

How could one not recognize Beatlejuice?
Cupich is not only a abortion-covering squish, he’s a coward.
For many reasons, Mayor Bug Eyes should not have been at that funeral or in line to receive the Communion Host.
She dismissed the rude response of her assistant about making time for the Memorial bigpipes.
She’s not even a Catholic. Does she even know that host is for Catholics only? She probably does know, and does this anyway to prove she can get away with it.
They have no discernment. They think nothing of giving the Body of Christ to anyone presenting pro abortion politicians or not
I’m surprised she did not spontaneously combust.
That was my first thought as well. I'm not even Catholic at this point and I full well remember that non-Catholics are not to receive communion at at Catholic mass. How utterly disrespectful of the liberal lesbian licker, lori Lightfoot to even go for communion at Officer Ella French's funeral.
I guarandamntee it that "thing" Lightfoot did it deliberately just to piss off Chicago Catholics.
How about this response;

You can do better than that “Chaplin”.
Your ability to offer Communion is worthless.
Those that worship Satan are well known to seek to consume the body of Christ, by any means available.
If she isn’t Catholic, then why did she go up? I don’t think it is too much to expect people to have a basic understanding of the religious practices of others, especially someone who is a public official and has a ceremonial role in attending such services. I know there are churches that practice “open communion” but I thought it was pretty well-known that the Catholic Church is not one of them. If she was in doubt, she could have had an aide google it. Of course, if the priest had turned her away — because she isn’t Catholic — I can just see the headlines — “Priest Refuses Communion to Lightfoot.”
I’m Lutheran and I even remember that the pastor will not give Communion to non-recognized members.
Communion is a Sacrament.
Not some Target or 7-11 purchase.
It sounds like he made a simple mistake. He owned it and I think that should be that. While it is incumbent on a priest not to knowingly give the host to a non-Catholic it is the responsibility of the recipient to only partake in communion if they are properly prepared for it. That means a number of things, among which is a requirement to be a Catholic, and to be in the right state of mind. She is not Catholic and she knew that what she was doing was wrong. I speculate that she was also not in the right state of mind as she is a rather conniving politician and was probably looking for a photo op only. She does not believe that Catholic teachings really mean anything. God will have something to say to her for doing what she did.
For tomorrow.
Interesting.
He should have offered her a swig of MD2020 and a Ritz cracker
Yep, this very much looks like a case of Soupy pulling a fast one. He saw black dyke mayor in the crowd and thought, “Hmmm, if she comes forward, and I give it to her, I’m kinda screwed. But if she comes forward, and I don’t give it to her, the headline will be ‘Soupy withholds communion from black lesbo pro-abortion mayor,’ and everyone might mistakenly think I’m somme kinda right-winger, and I don’t want that either.” So Soupy very slyly bowed out, and let the some poor sap chaplain be the fall guy.
I’m surprised that she would even want to take communion.
Fr. Dan Brandt is in a world of trouble. Apologize? Yes, he did, very well. Explain Catholic Doctrine? No, he did not. He failed to be clear and courageous. Punk. Giving communion to a pro-abortion, anti-family lesbian is first degree offense deserving the following punishment: bread and water daily, living in a monastery, cleaning floors, and hoping for a break in two years from a superior. Otherwise, he is toast.
Fr Dan Brandt said, “The first problem causing crime and gang presence is the absence of traditional families.” He is correct. There is hope for him.
Cupich set him up. This way Cupich wouldn’t have to take responsibility for either giving or denying Holy Communion to her. The rest of the priests of the archdiocese now know he will throw them under the bus in a heartbeat if he thinks he needs to.
The author made a very basic error right at the beginning of the story. The story referred to Lightfoot as a “non-Catholic Christian in a same-sex marriage”. Anyone in a “same sex marriage” is not a Christian of any denomination. You can’t live with your sin being the very thing that identifies you and be a Christian. Becoming a Christian requires repentance and turning AWAY from your sin, not celebrating it and making it a central part of your life.
