An Adrian Dominican sister spent a year poring through the congregation's archives under the direction of the order's leadership team, trying to document a policy, a procedure, a decision — anything, really — that would show why the community had so few Black sisters.
She dug through more than 145 boxes of records but found nothing, not even statistics on how many Black women had tried to enter the community and either were turned away or changed their minds.
"To our credit or stupidity — or unconsciousness, probably — we didn't record people's race," Sr. Pat Siemen, the congregation's president, said of the 2018 document search. "We were more interested in whether people had a baptismal certificate than we were in their race."
Finally, two things became clear: The archives weren't going to yield what the leadership council was looking for, and there were a couple of numbers that were an inescapable truth beyond any statistics that old records might reveal.
"After 135 years — at one point, we had 2,500 sisters — we've had only six [professed] Black sisters in our history, and only two Black sisters today," Siemen said — four left the congregation after final vows. "There are certain obvious conclusions one comes to."

They need to investigate their Systemic Marxism.
And how many now?
Reckon this.
People make choices of vocation based on many things.
My unintentional irony meter is pegging.
“To our credit or stupidity — or unconsciousness, probably — we didn’t record people’s race,”
Maybe they should have lowered their standards to encourage more blacks to become nuns.
Lower standards have worked for the military, for education, for the government and in private industry. Why shouldn’t the Catholic Church lower standards too?
So you’re ho on dope with a couple of kids… ain’t no reason you can’t be a nun.
The only systemic/institutional racism in the USA is called “affirmative action.”
Not only are straight, white males the only people it is legal to discriminate against, discrimination against them is required by law.
Hold on. I hear black women calling each other “sister” all the time. What gives?? :-)
The more traditional orders are flourishing. The modernist orders are all strapped for funds to support their majority of elderly sisters. There are certainly Negro sisters, especially in the traditionalist orders at least proportionally to Negro presence in the Church.
Don’t you have to be 18 to declare being a nun? What percentage of 18 year old black females, not planning on going to college, already have kids?
They need to investigate SYNTHETIC racism, period.
The stereotypes are correct?
Perhaps because there are few black Catholics?
Couldn’t be whiter if they were a National Park. You know, the parks that systematically tortured and oppressed blacks for so long that blacks genetically reject going to a national park?
I think the solution is busing. FORCE blacks to go to national parks and become nuns. Even make the black MEN become sisters! It is the only way to break through centuries of rejection....
Whoopi was a nun in a movie. Does she count?
I don’t know if there is a rule of age 18. I assumed so. Also I doubt they would let a woman become a nun who had kids.
It was that guy that said that “content of character” was what counted, not the color of one’s skin.
Guess that went way over the heads of these ninny nuns.
