Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 119

49  Remember your word to your servant,
    for you have given me hope.

50  My comfort in my suffering is this:
    Your promise preserves my life.

51  The arrogant mock me unmercifully,
    but I do not turn from your law.

52  I remember, Lord, your ancient laws,
    and I find comfort in them.

53  Indignation grips me because of the wicked,
    who have forsaken your law.

54  Your decrees are the theme of my song

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Middle-School English Teacher gave the same project to all of her classes every year. It was nearly impossible to achieve without some kind of adult help, and the wealthy parents of the community had come up with various ways of using private tutors, computers, design firms (yes...I heard of one parent doing THAT!) and various other resources to get the project done. I'll never understand how the teacher, after seeing highly professional and slickly produced projects crossing her desk every year, didn't realize that she was merely generating business for local Advertising and Graphic Design Firms.

The project consisted of producing a professional-looking, publishable book of poetry, There were 26 TYPES of poems that had to be represented, including a Sonnet, Free Verse, Iambic Pentameter, Contour Poem, Narrative, and Acrostic. Each poem had to get its own page and had to be ILLUSTRATED. The book had to be bound and presented for grades with a one month deadline.

While my music student Amy was delighted with the project (she could play five instruments, and was also a Songwriter), the other kids, who were not nearly as gifted, whined to their parents until professional help was secured.

Nevertheless, Amy's personal efforts ran a close second to some other kid's "professionally produced" slickly bound masterpiece on glossy paper that looked like a big business annual report. It wasn't fair, and Amy knew it. She took pride in her work, and was not going to succumb to the temptation to let someone else get paid to make her look good. We both agreed that, although the Sonnet was a tough one, the Acrostic was harder. To use the alphabet in such a way without having it sound contrived or unnatural was a real challenge!

By now, you should be seeing the incredible genius of Psalm 119. It is difficult to stick to the format and write each new stanza as an Acrostic, using only one letter as the beginning of the eight verses. It is even more difficult to keep the thread of meaning running consistantly throughout the 22 stanzas. On top of that, the meaning of EACH Stanza needs to be a different aspect of the same theme that runs throughout the poem, and also relate to the Initial Letter that defines the Stanza. Today's Letter s based upon a weapon of war. The lyrics and even the individual words refelct that God's Word is a Weapon. New Testament Readers will instantly call to mind Scriptures that confirm this, especially Ephesians 6.

Today's Letter, Zayin, is the Equivalent of the English "Z", but is pronounced "Tz" in Hebrew. It's Original Picture was a Weapon, and the Letter STILL Looks like a Sword or an Axe. It has many layers of Meaning. The Word of God IS a Two Edged Sword. It cuts Right To The Heart of Things, Doesn't It?
